Today, the Indian telecommunications sector with more than 1.8 billion subscribers is amongst the most hyper competitive and financially stressed markets.

Out of the total mix of subscribers, the number of urban subscribers is at 675.58 million with a tele-density of 160.78 while the rural subscriber base is at 511.05 million with a tele-density of 56.99, which is one third of the urban tele density.

This clearly depicts that there is a huge opportunity to serve this population segment, untouched by technology yet, to help them access mainstream socio economic opportunities.

With a huge youth segment, there is a huge opportunity to empower this section of society by delivering the benefits of connectivity. It is only then that India’s demographic advantage will truly benefit the society at large.

In order to bring to life, the government’s vision of a Digitally empowered India, it is fundamental to develop three layers of the telecom ecosystem i.e. network, device ecosystem and IT literacy.

Impetus on network expansion

The government’s focus on driving the benefits of mobility deeper into India has seen more than 5.54 lakh villages covered with mobile services, while 43,088 villages are yet to be covered.

This will ensure that connectivity is delivered across the country in a phased manner.

With BharatNet initiative, Government of India’s serious push and focus on digitizing bottom of pyramid is palpable.

However, there is a lot to be done and more intense thrust is required to ensure 100 percent network coverage to enable seamless internet experience eventually enabling socio economic development of the overall nation.

Affordable device ecosystem

This is the most important layer in the process of bridging the digital divide eventually paving the way for socioeconomic development of rural India.

Distribution strength, deep market penetration, understanding the consumers’ needs and affiliations and assuring a robust service promise are key tenets of winning this consumer.

Locally relevant and targeted outreach along with a compelling proposition of an affordable price point combined with futuristic technology is what this consumer aspires to own.

In addition, a one size fits all strategy is a recipe for failure, it’s important that brands create personal connect and interaction opportunities that seamlessly help integrate experiences in their everyday life.

Further, a strong connect with retailers, channel partners and distributors are key to captivate the rural markets since they have a strong foothold across the region.

Other strategic initiatives also include festive offers, local language compatibility, content, bundle packaging and warranty etc.

Digital literacy- a key to Digital India

Yet another most important aspect for this market segment is making the populace comfortable with these new technologies.

The power of today’s technology, the new thrust areas and the opportunities of growth that it offers are key aspects that require an awareness and education drive.

Brands that take this mantle of responsibility stand out and build consideration.

Comfort and acquaintance with these powerful tools can equip this underserved population to truly realize the benefits of connectivity and help in shaping the overall development index of the society.

CONCLUSION

There is huge untapped potential in the rural market of India. Thrust on factors such as network expansion, affordable device ecosystem, content localization, customized marketing strategy and digital literacy etc. become fundamental to bridge the digital divide.

Let the power of digital bring India to its place of glory as the population embraces the power of connectivity for an empowered society.

">
