NEW DELHI: Broadband India Forum<\/a> (BIF) on Thursday hailed the adoption of self-regulation code and toolkit by the OCCPs (Original Curated Content Providers) under the aegis of industry body Internet and Mobile Association of India<\/a> (IAMAI<\/a>) saying it is a \u201cresponsible and mature\u201d step and is also in line with the Trai\u2019s Recommendations Regulatory Framework for Over-The-Top (OTT<\/a>) Communication Services as issued on 14th September 2020.

\u201cIn the absence of any evident market failure in this vertical, we feel that the adoption of a self-regulation code and toolkit by the industry is the right way forward. BIF extends its compliments to the IAMAI and its member OCC companies for this proactive gesture,\u201d commented TV Ramachandran, President, Broadband India Forum.

OCC, OTT, and Rich Interactive Applications are the key growth drivers across sectors such as education, eCommerce<\/a>, entertainment, among others, BIF noted and added that the importance of these platforms has been further amplified during the Covid-19 crisis.

<\/div><\/div>It further said that these applications play a two-pronged role in society today--one by driving the growth of broadband and digital infrastructure. Secondly, by aiding in the economic development of the country.

In that sense, research agency ICRIER noted in a report that apps contributed a minimum of Rs 1.4 lakh crores to India\u2019s GDP in 2015-16, and was expected to rise to Rs 18 lakh crores in 5 years.

According to the German consultant WIK, each 10% increase in usage of Rich Interactive Applications also led to an average increase of $5.6 trillion in global GDP (0.33% of GDP) from 2000 to 2015.

BIF further said that liberalization and competition lead to greater innovations and ultimately, benefits for customers.

It also said the demand-pull created by OCCPs helps in enhancing digital infrastructure and consequently, in supporting the goals of Digital India.

\u201cTherefore, they should be provided all the required support to nurture and advance, for the benefit of the citizens and the growth of the national economy,\u201d it added.
