\"KM<\/figure>NEW DELHI: Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, has met telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw<\/a> in a bid to urge the government to expedite the conversion of Vodafone Idea<\/a>\u2019s license fee and spectrum dues to government equity, CNBC-TV18 reported Thursday, citing sources.

In September-end, the cash-strapped telecom operator had a net debt of around Rs 2.2 lakh crore with a gross cash balance of Rs 190 crore. The company\u2019s dues to banks and other lenders stood at Rs 15,080 crore, while trade payables, reflecting dues to vendors such as tower firms and suppliers including network providers, was at Rs 15,030 crore.

Notably, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and the finance ministry have cleared the conversion of dues into equity in May and July 2022. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), too, has secured all necessary approvals. However, as per the report, the file-work is pending at the department.

<\/div><\/div>Vaishnaw, speaking on the sidelines of a 5G launch event in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, said that Vodafone Idea needs capital infusion and not just the conversion of its dues into government equity.

\u201cVodafone Idea has many requirements. It has a particular requirement of capital. How much capital, who will infuse? All those things are under discussion at this point of time,\" Vaishnaw told reporters. \"The responsibility of capital has to come from various sources \u2026 All those things are complex issues.\u201d

The accrued interest on Vodafone Idea\u2019s AGR-related dues stands at close to Rs 16,130 crore and if the equity conversion happens, the government may get a 33% stake, making it the largest shareholder of the company, said analysts.

According to government officials, Vodafone Idea needs around Rs 40,000-45,000 crore for sustaining itself, and they want promoters to bring in half of this with banks funding the rest. \u201cIn the absence of promoter funding, it will be difficult for the company to get external investors,\u201d ET quoted a senior official as saying in a news report published Wednesday. \u201cWithout promoter infusion, even banks are unlikely to support.\u201d

<\/div><\/div>While rivals Reliance Jio<\/a> and Bharti Airtel<\/a> began rolling out their 5G services from October 2022, Vodafone Idea is yet to specify a timeline for the same.

The top two Indian telcos \u2013 Jio and Airtel \u2013 aim to extend the coverage of their 5G networks across India in 12-15 months.
