Although the telecom industry was struggling due to falling profit margins and growing debt burdens, the resilience displayed by the sector during the pandemic, coupled with support from various government measures, led to an increase in confidence in the long-term growth of the sector. This was further evidenced by our survey which indicated that nearly 61 per cent of the CEOs reported an earnings outlook of more than 10 per cent for the next three years. With that being said, telecom operators would have to evolve agile business models to meet with the changing customer needs, evolving cost structures and network requirements.

Enterprises have incorporated digital transformation at the forefront of their strategic business conversations. This has resulted in growth in adoption of connectivity-based tools and solutions to enable effective collaboration with key stakeholders of the organisation. This is evident from our survey that indicates nearly 50 per cent of organisations reporting a sharp acceleration in their digital transformation efforts. Digitalisation among businesses is being driven primarily through adoption of emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, data analytics, cloud etc. However, the efficacy of these technologies to enable associated applications and use cases depends majorly on the robustness of the underlying connectivity infrastructure. This presents a significant opportunity for telecom companies to evolve into digital service providers and actively participate in the digital transformation journeys that enterprises are undertaking. This would not only assist them in creating new revenue streams, but also reduce their dependency on the falling voice and internet data prices.

The telecom industry has already made strides in this direction through strategic partnerships with global IT companies and network equipment providers, with an aim to not only enhance their network infrastructure capability but also offer services to its enterprise customers beyond mobility solutions. Significant efforts and investments are being made in cloudification and virtualisation of the network so as to enable the delivery of enhanced digital solutions to the enterprise customers. As per our survey findings, over 69 per cent of the CEOs highlighted network virtualisation and cloudification as their current investment focus as they prepare themselves for 5G, with edge computing and data centres as areas that need investment.

5G is expected to be the ultimate catalyst for mass scale and effective implementation of some of the emerging technologies like IOT, AI, AR\/VR etc. Preparing for the next evolution of the 5G network provides great opportunity for telecom providers. However, with the ROIs still being unclear, telecom companies need to carefully consider how to transform their business models to gain a greater share of the value that will be created by 5G technology. It\u2019s time to move past the current average revenue per user (ARPU) model and determine the model that will lead to revenue creation, and not just the commoditization of the 5G pipe.","blog_img":"","featured":0,"status":"Y","seo_title":"Telco as a new digital warrior","seo_url":"telco-as-a-new-digital-warrior","cms_link":"telco-as-a-new-digital-warrior\/4667","updated_at":"2020-12-08 07:48:22","time":"2020-12-08 07:48:22","authors":[{"author_name":"Purushothaman KG","author_description":"Partner, Telecom Sector Leader, KPMG India","author_designation":"Partner, Telecom Sector Leader","author_company":"KPMG India","profile_pic":"retail_files\/author_1579865729_72222.jpg"}],"tags":["Industry","5G","IoT","ARPU","telecom news","India Mobile Congress"],"url_seo":"telco-as-a-new-digital-warrior"}">
