Mobile operators, device manufacturers, ad tech providers and content owners from across the world got together in Mobile World Congress last week, unveiling their upcoming products and technology, wooing business partners and consumers. The announcements highlighted in this show indicated and addressed what the next billions of mobile internet users, especially in India, would crave for in 2017. Here are my observations:

Nokia is making a comeback – Iconic New Nokia 3310 was launched

This year, we witnessed a number of high profile, much awaited launches of the latest smartphones and innovative technology. The handsets which entered India first such as Nokia and Blackberry, arguably the most loved handset among consumers, made a comeback with their exciting gadgets. These brands grabbed attention at one of the biggest stages in the world. Reminding us that consumers have strong associations with both the brands and many fond memories with these icons over the years.

India is adapting to mobile internet technology and the demand of entry level data enabled phones are high in this market. Hence, the comeback of Nokia phone with support for mobile banking and 4G capabilities will make it a bigger contender for growing Indian market share in 2017.

5G technology adoption will start in India this year

Consumers in India have come a long way as they continue to move from 3G to 4G, even in rural areas. But, now with the demand rising for smart cities, the industry is taking a new shape with the introduction of 5G. Telecom companies like BSNL is taking an initiative by signing an agreement with Nokia for 5G and internet of things. This kind of approach would give a natural evolution and influence the dynamics of the internet industry.

At Mobile World Congress, computing on the edge was another big topic among infrastructure providers. Edge computing involves light processing on intermediary servers or on the edge of the networks. This type of computing can lead to faster responses for mobile services, without putting stress on servers in the core network. Products like this would also have huge impact on the computing industry, gaining better control the flow of data whilst making more sense of it, especially with more data being collected by IoT devices.

Artificial Intelligence facilitates faster access to the information

The smartphone revolution is poised to go onto the next level - with superphones equipped with artificial intelligence now on the horizon. These technologies are quickly gaining ground for the companies that would use Google's voice assistant - which uses artificial intelligence to answer users' questions - in their newest handsets. Opera also started integrating artificial intelligence for faster access to the news that is most relevant and of interest to users. Implementation of AI technology inside the smartphone will help users to perform more tasks on their devices.

Global brands are heading towards Digital India and supporting Make in India

Brands like Apple and Oppo are going extra mile by opening its manufacturing units in India, thus supporting the Make in India initiative of the GOI. The IOT and Artificial Intelligence technology taken up by many brands would also transform and power the Indian market with its latest products. The introduction of (5G) wireless technology would provide the backbone for IoT that greatly improves data transfer speeds and processing power over its predecessors. This combination of speed and computing power will enable new applications for mobile technologies to function in the superlative manner. It will also open up new avenues for the network industry. Moreover, there are people in India who still don’t have a mobile phone. Hence, with Nokia’s comeback and with its adequate distribution network, it will be able to tap that near-edge market. No doubt, feature phones like this have the potential to do wonders. This year MWC has witnessed some cutting edge technologies and products which will undoubtedly change the dynamic of Indian Industry in the next two years.

">
