It is interesting that all major telecom companies are announcing grand capital expenditure plans, purchasing spectrum and offering consumers sweet deals to woo them in the race for data consumption.

It raises the question, when the industry went up in arms against the pricing put forth by the Indian government in 2013, did it necessarily believe that the price was too high? If not, then why shouldn’t the government persist with higher base prices in the planned auctions in the near future?

If yes, then all the current investment is counter intuitive, or perhaps just similar to the online shopping revolution. Online companies for the most part continue to incur losses. Amazon globally has operated for over 10 years and is yet to become profitable against all that has been invested in it.

Telecom companies that had licenses in 1994-96 broke ?some years before ?their 20-year ?license expiry.

In reality, the telecom industry is a high cash business, which results in a very high possible leverage. A case in point, Reliance Jio looks to invest Rs 1,00,000 crore without a service to show, much done through loan funding.

Moreover, the Indian telecom sector hopes the story of voice will be repeated in data services. As prices crash the consumption increases sufficiently to compensate. Yet, phase one of Indian mobile telephony was executed without much ground work – literally.

Tower back hauls are still being done wirelessly, congesting networks even when there is potential capacity available. There is a shortage of optic fibre cables connecting sites, there is little to offload the networks. When network operators like Nokia and Ericsson speak of dynamic networks that can balance load between sites depending on traffic, the on ground infrastructure is critical.

Vodafone and more recently Bharti Airtel seem to have figured out that there are no short cuts to cabled connectivity. Hence the emphasis on landline and cabled broadband users.

What remains to be seen is the cost benefit analysis of now putting in this infrastructure.

">
