In the last few weeks, there hasn't been a single major launch that does not have the word selfie or selfie camera attached in the communication to consumers. Oppo, camera smartphone with dual front cameras for group and individual selfies. Gionee, with a front flash and camera, showcased by Alia Bhatt. Tecno, yet again with front camera, flash and ambient flash from the screen. And yesterday, Vivo with a massive 20 MP front camera in the V5s.

To me, this shows two fundamental trends.

One, there is certainly a selfie overkill, even though most of us cannot do with enough selfies, and this will continue.
Two and a more important one, there seems to be very little left on the spec side for handset makers to pitch their products on, which may ring bells of trouble.

Think about it. A year ago, three to four brands would fight it out in the market on features that would be unique or marquee to that phone model or brand. For instance, Samsung's curved screen display versus OnePlus 3's dash charging that gave full power in 15 minutes. But today, all I see around is how A phone's selfie technology is better than B phone's selfie camera.

One may argue that there is a huge market demand for having a good selfie phone or camera, which must be addressed, and I agree with it completely. But, the USP of a phone cannot be limited to that anymore, specially when technologies around virtual assistants, health tracking, VR and AI, to name a few, are growing by leaps and bounds.

The industry should be gearing up already to take these features and make them their highlights, because consumers will take the selfie feature for granted, no matter the brand, and will ask for more, much sooner than we think.

">
