The investments in 5G will not only boost speed and service experience for the traditional consumers meaningfully, they will also allow Communications Service Providers (CSPs) in India the opportunity to capture new value plays from enterprise 5G and adoption of next generation technologies like Edge computing, cloud, AI and other exponential technologies. 5G will serve as an evolution from the existing 4G networks to scale connectivity capacity to meet the evolving requirements (like management of increased traffic and connectivity capabilities) of consumer and enterprise customers across industries.

One of the biggest advantages of this 5G evolution will be the latency reduction, which is estimated to be tenfold over current technology. The impact of this factor of reduced latency alone will be far-reaching. Latency will be the "gravity" that draws applications to the Edge and to the enterprises, and can unleash cross-industry plays as a monetization mechanism for CSPs. In fact, the market opportunity for CSPs is immense as highlighted in a recent global survey by IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) that saw participation from 500 global telecom executives from 21 countries. In the survey, more than 91 per cent of high performing CSPs revealed that they anticipate outperforming their current financial expectations in five years as a result of using 5G-enabled Edge computing services.

Be ready to capitalize on 5G

Capitalizing on an investment in a 5G future will demand changes to the underlying network architecture. However, rolling out full-fledged 5G infrastructure is expensive, time consuming, and CSPs will be cautious to protect their existing investments in 4G. Some CSPs can upgrade their network equipment by enabling their existing 4G towers to support 5G. CSPs will also be able to integrate elements of 4G and 5G as they see fit and by replacing software for the full network with more flexible, virtualized, and cloud native offerings.

5G networks will have embraced cloud native principles and so will lend themselves to a very high degree of automation. However, the journey can already be started in 4G, to the extent that pre-cloud native applications lend themselves to automation. 4G networks will be used alongside 5G networks for the most part of the current decade; and hence the investments made in technology including cloud and automation in 4G will have sustained paybacks for CSPs.

To achieve this, CSPs can consider transitioning from pre-integrated network functions provided by traditional network equipment providers to next generation and disaggregated networks by partnering with leading technology companies with proven leadership & experience. This will ensure access to deep telecom expertise, best-of-breed technologies and automation, and on-demand skills.

Private 5G networks can fuel Edge Computing

While the promise of 5G is high-speed, large volume transfers of data, there is a parallel technology architecture component emerging around Edge. Edge capabilities provide distributed computing enabling real time, localized data, with low latency services and the ability to build innovative vertical use cases across a range of industries. With the Edge architecture, systems will have the power to deploy, run, manage, and maintain application workloads closer to the source of data. Instead of taking large, complex data sets to a cloud data center, parts of the cloud application will be made available at the Edge, closer to its original source.

One of the key drivers of enhanced Edge adoption in enterprises can be private 5G networks to specifically run Edge and critical applications. This can be achieved by both CSPs and systems integrators collaborating in different capacities to design, build and run these networks. Such private 5G networks can have multiple effective applications especially in sectors like manufacturing and healthcare.

Telecommunications will be transformed with the opportunities offered by 5G, cloud and AI

CSPs are also embracing open hybrid cloud platforms that enable public cloud scale and services while keeping them in control of their transformation journey and data. The value of adopting an open hybrid cloud approach means that CSPs will have the flexibility to choose where they build and deploy services. India’s leading CSPs including Airtel (through its Open Hybrid Cloud Network) and Vi (through its Open Universal Hybrid Cloud platform) had already embarked on this journey over the last year. Technology companies including IBM are launching open, hybrid cloud platforms that support a thriving network of ecosystem partners, address the unique needs of the industry, and that will help CSPs evolve from networks into platforms.

The IBV study mentioned in the beginning had also found that half (50%) of high performing CSPs agree they must become strategic cloud platforms blending a diverse partner ecosystem, and 59% agree they must become secure clouds infused with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation. This offers new opportunities in the ability to innovate and engage new partners who offer best-in-class solutions. Again, referencing the recent announcement of the launch of 5G in India – CSPs like Airtel, Jio, and Vi have already been working on developing India-specific use-cases, leveraging a broad partner ecosystem.

Network transformation will happen through the migration of network functions towards software defined workloads distributed across cloud environments, the maturity of global standards, and the use of slicing, data, and analytics to manage and automate. The evolution from a monolithic network approach in India, where functions were pre-integrated, to a disaggregated environment presents opportunities and challenges. Investing in automation and AI now will thus help the CSPs be prepared to better serve their customers and win out over competitors in this next era of telecom transformation.

To sum it up, there is no doubt that a massive growth opportunity awaits CSPs as technological disruptions and rapid convergence transform many sectors, from smarter clean energy grids to improving the efficacy of public sector first responders. With Edge computing, AI, and open hybrid cloud platforms, CSPs can achieve the true potential of 5G while maintaining control of where and how they deploy their network services, Edge platforms and enterprise offerings.

印度领先的csp包括Airtel(通过开放混合云网络)和Vi(通过其开放通用混合云平台)在去年已经开始了这段旅程。
