I witnessed our business going down from being the No. 1 smartphone brand to ZERO. I witnessed the shut-down\/downsizing of many organisations. People everywhere were worrying about losing their jobs and livelihoods during the lockdown. I personally also had many sleepless nights as I wasn\u2019t sure if we would ever be able to go back to our usual business levels.

However, we were sure of our intent of not giving up and giving it our best. As we continue to fight the pandemic together, I would like to share a few things that helped all of us at Mi India to emerge stronger.

Regularity and frequency<\/strong>

During these testing times when team members are more isolated than ever, regular team communication is critical to maintain a routine, appeal to the spirit and reiterate that we are all in this together. At Mi India, we decided to organize daily and weekly catch ups with our employees and partners to reinstate belief in the organisation and leadership. These catch-ups not only helped to enhance productivity, but also uplifted individuals in an otherwise gloomy state of affairs.

Transparency<\/strong>

Communication during a global crisis is challenging due to a variety of reasons. With consumer & employee apprehension at an alltime high, leaders have to act based on limited information that\u2019s constantly changing. In times like these, while it\u2019s tempting to share what\u2019s convenient, we made a conscious decision to empower everyone by sharing accurate information, even when things were not looking promising. We patiently answered all questions (sometimes for even hours). This helped us manage the stress that team members were experiencing due to the pandemic.

Giving job security<\/strong>

During such uncertain times, when employee apprehension is at its peak, it is important that business leaders communicate transparently to accomplish desired behavior change. During the pandemic, as we sensed the sentiment of fear amongst our employees, we decided that there would be no layoffs or salary cuts. Once announced, we saw the energy levels of teams going up substantially. Their passion to come together to fight the adverse situation helped us to tackle the state of affairs better.

Leading with empathy

During these tough times, as many of our team members and their loved ones were battling with medical emergencies, we ensured that they did not go through it alone. Our teams helped each other in every possible circumstance, starting from arranging medicines that were in short supply, coordinating for hospital beds, and more. Additionally, we procured oxygen concentrators for our Mi India family and sent one to every team member in need. I personally spoke to all the team members and family members who went through tough times.
