The COVID 19 pandemic has disrupted the world in unprecedented ways. It has changed a lot of things — the way we work, consume, play and collaborate, with easy communications being the key and accelerating dependence on digital the way to the future. Companies and individuals want better experiences, improved networks which can enhance productivity—which next-generation network, that is 5G promises to deliver. The deployments might have been delayed — with pilots and spectrum auctions timelines re-adjusted, but various stakeholders, including telcos and governments, agree that 5G is the way for a future-ready economy. Not surprisingly, discussions on 5G deployment were going on among various stakeholders even as the pandemic engulfed the world.

5G is the fifth generation of cellular technology with high speed, low latency, and better services compared to 3G or 4G. 5G networks use a new radio technology and different network architecture to deliver higher bandwidth and lower latency than the previous generation networks. 5G deployments promise peak data speed of up to 10 Gbps – about 100 times faster than the 100 Mbps of 4G. While latency, a measure of time it takes for data to travel from phone to distant servers, could be less than a millisecond in 5G networks.

Such low latencies will have far-reaching consequences on our daily lives. It will improve manufacturing, gaming experiences, public safety and much more. 5G will enhance automation across industries, enabling higher deployments of robots on factory floors. This promises to usher in `cobotics’ or humans and machines working together. Users will be able to play Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) based games over the networks — as live streaming becomes more efficient, with close to zilch latency. 5G will also enable public safety with millions of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors deployed across cities regularly gathering and transmitting data. So, response to say, fire or accident at any place in a city will be far quicker than it is today.

5G will also have an impact on healthcare—bringing doctors and patients closer even though they might be thousands of miles apart. Remote surgeries may be possible, with doctors sitting hundreds of miles away operating on, say, patients in rural areas. High-quality video streaming and low latency will help doctors visualise and perform surgeries using robots, leading to a massive leap in medical advancements. Besides, 5G will usher in several other benefits that will impact our daily lives for the better.

Various stakeholders like telcos, network equipment providers, device makers, services providers, and so on will play a key role in 5G deployment. Of course, chip makers like MediaTek will have a significant role to play in this massive 5G telecom upgrade. MediaTek has introduced its Dimensity family of 5G chips (1000 series, 800 series, 720), offering flagship features, power, and performance to premium as well as mid-range 5G smartphones. The 5G chipset family features powerful system-on-chips (SoCs) with integrated 5G modems.

While device makers like realme and iQoo are already offering 5G phones in the Indian market, 5G networks will take longer. All the telcos — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea — are partnering with various equipment vendors for trials and to test out the kind of services that could be made available.

5G services can be delivered over a number of frequency bands: 1GHz offering lower range and lower speeds; mid-band up to 6 GHz offering similar range to 4G but at faster speeds and the millimetre-wave offering the best speeds in the 20 GHz or higher frequency bands. In India, only low and mid-band frequencies are available as of now. And 5G spectrum auctions have been deferred multiple times.

Auctions are finally expected to be held by early next year. However, a big concern among telcos is the high reserve prices of auctions, much higher than in other countries around the world. All the three major operators in India have expressed their reservations on this, asking the regulators to relook at pricing models.

Nonetheless, 5G might have been delayed by several quarters but it seems to be finally taking a serious shift towards deployment. We expect to see trial deployment by operators, perhaps over the next 10-18 months, thus bringing in the most significant upgrade since mobile telephony started in India, back in the mid-1990s. Indeed, the future of next generation mobility does seem more closer.

["5G","5GWorld","5G development","4G","5G future
5g-deployment-seamless-connectivity-for-a-future-ready-economy"}">
