As the scramble for digital transformation thrust upon us by Covid-19 begins to subside, the coming year is expected to be a phase for consolidation in the Data Center landscape. Seeking more resources to understand and optimise the DC infrastructure without increasing load on the existing structure will be key. IT will need to matches up to hybrid requirements for companies to operate successfully in the future, without being disrupted again by unforeseen happenstance. New technologies, new designs, how AI can be harnessed for better agility is likely to take centre stage in CIO/CTO discussions.

Data Centres must stand for agility by being more technologically adaptable, scalable and efficient. The online shift occurred quickly but a large number of people did not harness technology in the most optimal manner. This increased the instances of cyberattacks, fraud and a violation of online security. With increase in consumers requirements, the infrastructure backbone of DCs will need to be strengthened. Digital traffic processing, which in the last two years has increased considerably with increased need for speed and performance, would enhance the backbone.

The explosion in cloud adoption fuelled by
IoT and the impending arrival of 5G will be drive the growing shift towards distributed 'edge' computing. Edge data centres have become pivotal in bringing the cloud to the local level. These data centres have the capability to enable much of the data processing, storage, control and management of local applications to take place much closer to users, machines and devices. Smaller data centres with power capacities of 2MW that provide services from central cloud servers while lowering latency are likely to mushroom. We may even expect to see containerised data centres - modular data centres built into a standard shipping container! ‘Server rooms in a box' provide various advantages for mobile and Wi-Fi technologies and may be as commonplace as electrical substations in the near future.

Rack-level security will become the data centre’s last line of physical defence. Physical security works in tandem with
cybersecurity measures and is a vital part of the equation. It ensures a multi-layered approach that recognises the threats as a whole rather than in isolation. To further enhance protection, an area of development is the impending shift toward physical protection at a rack level. We will see the growth of purpose-built facilities having perimeter security and access control for data centres and computer rooms to be more physically secure. Specific access control technologies and video verification will be employed for access in the racks and cabinets. To mitigate internal and external threats, an integrated and layered approach to security is likely to become the norm, beginning beyond the data centre's perimeter and extending down to the rack level.

The digitisation processes have created new areas where modern day devices help improve efficiency, overall productivity and support employees in improving their responses to increasing demand whilst maintaining quality standards. In the future, we will see humans collaborating more closely with machines, and this will create an agile digital workforce that can maintain a high-level, steady output.

Efficient date center design will be imperative in order to achieve efficiency, performance and enhance customer experience. To make date centres efficient, it should be possible for the infrastructure to support more loading, greater use of customers (sign-ups, etc.), optimistic performance, maintenance, catering to and better serving various businesses in the long term.
