Mumbai: Vodafone Idea (Vi) has assured banks over the last few weeks that it will not default on payments. It has told the lenders that since its next installment of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues is scheduled only in March 2022, the bulk of the cash flow it generates from fundraising will be used to pay the banks, people familiar with the development told ET.

“Last year, the Vi management had told us that it won’t be able to pay up our dues; now the tune is completely different,” a top bank official said. “The management has told us that it has changed the brand identity, and is going to raise Rs 25,000 crore. It is also going to raise tariffs. I believe Vi is in a positive territory now.”

Lenders have also been writing back provisions made on the account.

“I think the worst is behind for Vi; the biggest takeaway is that between now and March 2022, Vi does not have any spectrum payment to make and banks have been assured that all the cash flow coming into the company is for servicing loans. In fact, we have been rolling back provisions that we made on that account,” said another private bank official.

State Bank of India has lent Rs 11,200 crore to Vi, while Punjab National Bank has advanced Rs 1,000 crore. Private banks led by IndusInd Bank (Rs 5,000 crore) and ICICI Bank (Rs 1,700 crore) are the other major lenders.

Vi did not respond to ET’s queries.

AGR case: Vodafone Idea refuses to provide any bank guarantee, says no funds

ET had recently reported that banks had asked loss-making
Vodafone Idea (Vi) and its promoters to provide them with a letter of comfort or other guarantees that their loan obligations will be fulfilled. Vi has said that its continuation as a going concern depends on successful negotiations with lenders and its ability to generate the cash flow needed to settle or refinance its liabilities and guarantees as they fall due.

Vi’s net debt was Rs 1,14,510 crore at the end of September, compared with Rs 1,15,500 crore in Q1, including deferred spectrum payment obligations.

The telco, formed out of the merger between the UK’s Vodafone Group and the
Aditya Birla Group in August 2018, sharply narrowed its loss in the September quarter to Rs 7,203.4 crore. However, the telco continues to lose subscribers – 8 million in the just-ended quarter and 11 million in the first three months of this financial year. The telco has about 271 million users, compared with about 408 million at the time of the merger.

Vi needs to pay over Rs 50,000 crore in AGR dues over 10 annual instalments through March 31, 2031. Besides, Vi needs to expand its 4G network and catch up with rivals
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to stall subscriber losses and start adding users.

Vi managing director Ravinder Takkar recently told analysts that the company should raise up to Rs 25,000 crore via debt and equity within the next two to three months. He had also said the telco won’t shy away from being the first to increase tariffs.
