NEW DELHI: The people living in unserved regions should get access to these (satellite communication<\/a> or SatCom<\/a>) technologies to ensure inclusive growth, K. Sivan, secretary, Department of Space (DoS<\/a>) and Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO<\/a>) Tuesday said.

“The people living in unserved and under-served places should get access to these technologies in order to ensure inclusive growth,” Sivan said in a message to India SatCom 2020 virtual event organised by the Broadband India Forum (BIF).

The top official lauded the efforts of the Delhi-based group and added that
satellite<\/a> communication can deliver ubiquitous internet service to the masses in a cost-effective manner and in keeping with the national mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat<\/a> (self-reliant India) by giving high importance to indigenous initiatives.

Citing studies, the digital communications forum said that the government’s ambitious ‘
Digital India<\/a>’ and ‘Broadband for All’ initiatives could benefit from satellite broadband.

“India, with its many remote, unconnected and difficult-to-access terrains, coupled with extremely low penetration of fixed-line and fiber infrastructure, needs satellite broadband for inclusive and widespread digital connectivity,” it said in a statement.

TV Ramachandran, president, BIF said that the liberalisation of the space, sector would facilitate a number of benefits, including provisioning of broadband to the unserved and underserved in a faster and efficient manner.
