NEW DELHI: Caller identification (ID) and spam detection application Truecaller on Thursday rolled out its latest version, Truecaller 12 with the major feature addition of a Video Caller ID, Call Recording for Free users, and a redesigned user interface (UI) that separates calls and messages into separate tabs.

The
Truecaller version 12 comes loaded with two new premium features for paid users — Ghost Call and ‘Announce Call’ that speaks out loud caller name, even on headphones, for regular voice calls and Tuecaller HD voice calls.

“We're launching Truecaller 12. That's our next version of Truecaller. It's a very, very exciting update. I think personally, I'm very excited about this because it has innovations on the core of what we stand for, which is Caller ID. It makes the offering much more comprehensive,” said
Rishit Junhjunwala, Chief Product Officer and Truecaller India MD, during a press briefing.

The Video Caller ID lets users personalize their caller ID with a 10-second video.

“Today's innovation is about taking caller ID from just name and photo and letting people add a video to their caller ID. This way once you set your video caller ID, your friends and family on Truecaller that you call will see this personalized video that you've set,” Jhunjhunwala said.

With Call Recording being made available to Free users, Truecaller is seeking to serve broad user needs.

“... this could be professional use cases where you want to record an important call and refer back to it later for notes. But also in some personal use cases where people are getting defrauded, and they wanted to record some of these calls,” Jhunjhunwala said.

But the receiver won’t get a prompt by Truecaller if the other side is recording the call.

“So we follow laws in India as well as we do globally, the Indian laws, they do not have a policy that asks us to play a prompt or anything like that for recording. So we don't do that,” Jhunjhunwala said.

These recordings, he said, will be stored on the device while the videos for caller ID will be stored on Truecaller’s Cloud storage.
