NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is expected to come out soon with a slew of recommendations to promote localised data centres to domestically meet burgeoning demand in line with the Centre's Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) campaign.

"India should also become a leader in data centres. In general, data going outside the country should be prevented," a top Trai official said, adding that the regulator is working on to firm its views and is expected to release its recommendations within a month's time following the suo motu consultation process already undertaken with stakeholders.

Last month, Trai conducted an open house discussion (OHD) on a consultation paper on creating a regulatory framework for promoting data economy through setting up of data centres, content delivery networks and interconnect exchanges in India.

"Companies require cloud data centres that are needed to fulfil future demand. Technology players too wanted to set up data centres and content delivery networks in India," the regulatory official further said.

In December, last year, the telecom watchdog had released a consultation paper in line with the Centre's proposed scheme to incentivise investments to set up hyper-scale data centers in the country, and to boost the existing
data centre ecosystem capacity.

However, the sector watchdog also deliberated the issues pertaining to data privacy, security and ownership in context with its own July 2018 recommendations, as well as the Personal Data Protection Bill (PDP) of 2019 whose new version is in works.
