NEW DELHI: There has been a confidence among investors and stakeholders in India's fifth generation or 5G future, built up over the last few years, a top executive of London-based telco group said.

"India’s market has changed so much in the last five years. There are certainly some stakeholders and investors in the country looking to participate who do have confidence that this is a great place for the future of 5G," Julian Gorman
GSMA Asia head told ETTelecom.

Gorman further said that while the rest of the world move towards 5G, a lot of countries would start to look at India as a 'guiding star in 5G' contrary to the traditional domination by the US and China.

GSMA represents nearly 800 telecom carriers worldwide including
Jio, Airtel and Vi in India.

"I believe India, like it did in the 4G era, will create its own unicorns, innovations that will define India as different from other 5G nations," he said.

In India’s first-ever
5G spectrum auction, the Indian government sold 71% of the total 72,098 MHz of airwaves put up on table for Rs 1,50,173 crore.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-owned
Reliance Jio purchased the highest quantum of spectrum of 24,740 MHz across the 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 3300 MHZ, and 26 GHz bands, shelling out Rs 88, 078 crore.

Jio, India's top telecom operator by revenue market share (RMS) plans to deploy 5G on a standalone (SA) mode.

"The operators going straight to standalone, is a sign of commitments and confidence," he said, adding that even with the idea of Jio going standalone, there are very few countries who have really gone down the standalone path yet.

Bharti Airtel, India’s second largest telco, driven by Sunil Mittal picked up 19,867 MHz of spectrum across 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands with a total sum of Rs 43,084 crore. The telco, contrary to rival Jio, is deploying non standalone (NSA) 5G network, citing ecosystem readiness.

"It’s about the intent of the operators and the diversity of their actions. The standalone (SA) networks for Jio and the non-standalone (NSA) networks for Airtel indicate that there is a greater breadth of potential for investment in different use cases," Gorman added.

India's third-largest telecom carrier
Vodafone Idea bought 6,228 MHz of airwaves across 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands for Rs 18,799 crore. New entrant Adani Data Networks acquired 400 MHz in the 26 GHz band for Rs 212 crore, primarily for captive use.

The GSMA executive said that a killer user case or innovation that would define 5G, is still beyond the horizon, with the enabling ecosystems, and policy frameworks that encourage investments in network infrastructure and innovations, could facilitate such.

"India is a massive market, and if you look at the amount of money the operators have said they will invest and you look at the forecast for economic benefit there is a massive potential and it’s a competitive market," he said.

"The high impact 5G
industry community originated in Asia, but countries are still now looking to export 5G expertise and innovation between countries," Gorman added.
