KOLKATA: India's telecom companies are likely to splurge Rs 1 lakh crore on buying spectrum across bands in the next auction likely in September, credit rating agency Crisil said.

The top three carriers - Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular - are likely to account for 55-60% of the total spend to defend their turfs ahead of Reliance Jio Infocomm's entry, it said.

"Unlike previous auctions, operators do not face business continuity issues this time, but we expect reasonably healthy participation as incumbents will ramp up their 3G and 4G
spectrum holdings ahead of Reliance Jio's entry," Crisil Research director Ajay Srinivasan said in an official statement on Monday.

The Union cabinet had last month approved what will be India's biggest spectrum sale, in which the government plans to auction over 2200 MHz of airwaves across 4G bands (700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands) and the 2100 MHz 3G band.

Srinivasan, however, said that he expects bidding for exorbitant 4G airwaves in the coveted 700 MHz band to be "extremely selective" as he expects telecom firms to opt for "less pricey" airwaves in the 1800 MHz band to plug 4G gaps.

"We see not more than 10% of the spectrum in the 700 MHz band put up for auction being sold," Crisil said. The agency said that it expects to plug 4G holes in leadership circles through less expensive 1800 MHz airwaves.

Crisil, however, said it expects telecom operators to lap up nearly half of the spectrum auctioned in the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, and buy nearly the entire quantum of airwaves auctioned in the 800 MHz and 900 MHz bands.

The agency said it foresees limited bidding interest for airwaves in the 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands due to coverage limitations and lack of a mature devices ecosystem in case of the latter. According to Crisil, the initial outgo towards spectrum acquisition in the current fiscal will be Rs 37,000 crore, which is lower than the budgetary estimates of about Rs 56,000 crore.

The agency said that some incumbents may have to "pony up equity and/or recalibrate portfolios and exit investments with low returns to reduce pressure on the balance sheet," especially since profitability and cash flows are likely to be "under the pump in the near term as tariffs slide in Reliance Jio's entry".

Panasonic India to develop artificial intelligence tech for smartphones; plans strategic acquisitions
ARTICLE
/news/panasonic-india-to-develop-artificial-intelligence-tech-for-smartphones-plans-strategic-acquisitions/53047319
Last month, the Union Cabinet had approved what will be India’s biggest spectrum sale likely in early September, in which the government plans to auction over 2200 Mhz of airwaves across 4G bands (700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands), and the 2100 Mhz 3G band.
["industry","spectrum","Crisil","spectrumauction2016","Voda2016","Airtel2016","Idea2016
telecomnews/indian-telecom-operators-to-spend-rs-1-trillion-in-auction-crisil"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-07-04" data-index="article_1">
