NEW DELHI: Indian telecom operators have initially not gone ahead with Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) deployments due to apprehensions around its maturilty, said a senior executive of Indian subsidiary of Japanese IT networks and system integrator NEC Corporation.

“Why it has not seen the traction that it would have been seeing by now is because of the inherent concern that any operator would have for deploying a technology that is new,”
Shiv Kumar Singh, chief operating officer (COO) of NEC India told ETTelecom an interview, adding that open and disaggregated networks are getting deployed globally and India will follow suit. “As and when that happens, India would also fall in line."

A large part of telecom operators’ CapEx goes into equipment deployment which results in a vendor–specific ecosystem where “true interoperability” does not exist, Singh noted. By contrast, Open RAN can allow a telco to scale up as per its needs while avoiding lock-in, in terms of a particular OEM, price band, or feature set that one particular vendor is supplying.

Finnish company Nokia, Sweden's Ericsson and Korea's Samsung have bagged
5G radio deals from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

Singh said that NEC is in discussions with telcos, including Vodafone Idea, on securing OpenRAN related business. “When the operators are ready to deploy Open RAN, we will be the first ones. We will accordingly announce at the right time.”

Both Jio and Airtel have OpenRAN strategies which they want to execute in the mid-to-long term. While Jio is working on its own, Airtel is working with various partners to develop an OpenRAN stack.

The company intends to supply new Radio Units (RU), wireless and optical backhaul equipment and E-band radio, according to the operator’s requirements.

Additionally, on the E-band side, NEC India is negotiating with Airtel. The Sunil Mittal-driven telco has awarded E-band and multi-band solution contracts to Aviat Networks and Ceragon Networks as its 5G rollouts gain momentum.

“We have over 100,000 such links deployed for the traditional microwave. And the same story I'm very confident will be repeated for E-band,” the executive affirmed.

Singh noted that NEC India has been grappling with supply chain issues. However, it has taken several steps including increasing efficiencies in procurement to tide over them. “You will find the change very soon. It will soon reflect in our position in the market.”

On competition, the COO said that the “question” will come up when a new entrant has occupied a significant share of the market.

NEC India’s growth in the telecom business will be in double digits once the fifth-generation network scales across the country, the executive said without sharing specifics. He added the company will increase its investments in telecom gear and technologies, research and development, while increasing its headcount — which stands at 5,000 currently.

“Japan is heavily committed to being a significant contributor to Indian efforts in doing technology and maybe bringing the made-in-Japan kind of quality to the Indian endeavors,” he added.

“We are going to contribute to the digital transformation in the areas of public safety, smart cities, logistics, and communications. 5G is one of the fortes that we're looking at,” the executive concluded. “The next two years are very, very ambitious for us.”
