REUTES/Sarah Meyssonnier/

NEW DELHI: Cisco Systems, a US-based networking company is working on use cases across multiple industries to offer a revenue model for enterprise customers to drive private 5G adoption.

“We are working on private 5G, LTE and use cases, specifically for industries that require technologies like 5G as-a-service,” Anand Bhaskar, managing director, Service Providers, Cisco India & SAARC told ETTelecom, adding that the objective was to provide use cases in multiple sectors to enterprise customers so that they could get more revenue and build a sustainable revenue model.

A captive network is an extension to a wireless technology for the creation of a dedicated local area network (LAN) within a business facility. 5G service offered by this network will only be utilised by the enterprise concerned and no one else.

Digital communications companies like Cisco are looking to cash in on the opportunities offered by 5G technology by providing enterprises with innovative software-defined networking, cloud, and security for
private 5G networks. But the hurdle has been the absence of any proven, standard and successful use cases hurting the monetisable possibilities.

Both telecom carriers and large companies or system integrators are concerned about the lack of industry-specific monetizable use cases for captive or private 5G networks.

"I think the conversation is also around how we monetise the 5G network, and how we use 5G towards enterprise. 2G, 3G and 4G were primarily consumer-- led. 5G is going to be an enterprise-driven venture, so building more use cases is critical," the top executive said.

More than 20 companies in India including Tata Communications, Larsen & Toubro, Capgemini, Infosys and GMR have applied to obtain spectrum to deploy a captive 5G network.

In last year's spectrum auction, the Ahmedabad-based diversified conglomerate headed by Gautam Adani purchased 400 MHz airwaves in the 26 GHz band for Rs 212-crore to deploy private 5G networks across its business including ports, mining, power and gas.

The Chuck Robbins-headed company has been working on next generation-led private networks worldwide including India and is undertaking pilot programs across industries such as mining, healthcare and manufacturing.

"Cisco is working with clients to enable 5G to help set up their backhaul and transport networks and also on the packet core side where initial trials are happening across areas such as manufacturing and ports," Bhaskar said.

He further explained that there are a lot of business opportunities in India given the market scale in terms of the large consumer base.

In the 5G era, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is going to be one of the biggest use cases where all customers are looking for it.

The company has a deep engagement with service providers and as a part of "true 360 relationship", it builds their networks, closely works them to digitise their business customers and partners with them to sell portfolio to other enterprises.

Cisco has partnerships with top two incumbents --
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel and it aims to work with a larger set of customers in domains such as manufacturing, mining and logistics, he said.

With the fifth generation services being rolled out globally, competition has increased in this space of private 5G to make it a highly competitive industry. Cisco faces rivals like Juniper Networks, Arista Networks, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) offering similar products and services globally. Companies are pushing private 5G adoption across the automotive, logistics, healthcare, retail and public sectors.

The demand for private 5G networks has soared as enterprises seek digital transformation. With ultra-low latency rates, these captive networks provide scalability and high reliability to businesses.
