The move is in keeping with the 14-day at-home quarantine that agencies such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are suggesting for travellers who return from China. Employees are being asked to limit interaction and monitor their health over the two-week period.

ET has learnt that German technology giant
Bosch and US software products firm Citrix are among two firms that have mandated work-from-home for employees returning from China. Other global technology firms that had high instances of employees travelling to China are adopting similar measures.

“The number of employees travelling to China each year will be in the high double-digits, with some people making multiple trips as well,” said a senior Bosch employee, adding she did not know how many employees might have been asked to work from home after returning from China recently.

India has over 1,100
GICs (Global Inhouse Centres) and while most companies serve US or European markets, electronics manufacturers such as Bosch, Harman, Blaupunkt and others have significant exposure to China. This makes China one among the top-three most travelled to locations for employees after their own headquarters, multiple employees and managers in tech firms told ET.

An executive from an enterprise travel company said that while China is not the most-visited location for employees from Indian tech companies, there is higher exposure for employees of smartphone manufacturers and hardware firms in India. Others said that GICs with sister concerns in China also see a fair bit of travel of employees from India.

A senior executive at the automotive technology major Harman told ET that emails were sent to employees a few days ago asking them to manage work via video conferencing and on restrictions regarding their travel to China.

Harman, which has a good number of employees in China and sends staff members on assignment from India, told ET that it has been closely monitoring the situation and advising employees.

"Harman is closely monitoring and assessing developments on the outbreak on a daily basis. We are heeding the advice of governments and the World Health Organization in regard to air travel and when our employees in China can safely report to work. We continue to provide travel safety guidance to our employees around the world and will take every appropriate measure to protect our employees," said a company spokesperson.

Bosch and Citrix did not respond to ET's queries until the time of going to press.

Industry analysts say the technology sector has seen business impacted due to delays in important meetings and some employees in China not resuming work.

"We hear that important meetings (are) being delayed and employees who had gone to China for Chinese New Year have not come back to work," said a Bengaluru-based HR industry expert.

Sanchit Vir Gogia of Greyhound Research said some of the large technology services companies are also likely to get impacted as many Japanese natives are located in China and are servicing their Japanese clients.
