Gandhinagar<\/a>: State government on Thursday dropped its plans to ban mobile internet<\/a> on Sunday because the written exam for selection of secretariat and non-secretariat clerks after criticism mounted from various quarters including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) and the public at large.<\/p>\n

\n\tPradipsinh Jadeja, minister of state (MoS), home issued a statement late in the evening which said: \"The government has not issued any order to restrict internet services on October 16, Sunday. Internet services will continue on that day on regular basis (sic)\".<\/p>\n

Earlier on Thursday, chairman of the Gujarat<\/a> Gaun Sewa Pasandgi Mandal (Gujarat Subordinate Staff Selection Board) Asit Vora said that the board had written to the state government and all collectors asking that mobile internet services be blocked in all districts from 10am to 2pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\n\t\"In the past, we have had bitter experiences of mobile internet being misused to leak exam papers. We have been also forced to cancel exams. As a preventive measure, we have written to the state government and collector offices to block internet from 10am to 2pm, during the exam hours, to avoid any paper leaks,\" Vora said.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the government had blocked mobile internet during the revenue talati exams this Feburary, the move to impose another ban for exams was widely panned.<\/p>\n

Political parties like AAP were quick to give it a political dimension. Harshil Nayak, spokesperson of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Gujarat said: \"Fearing the popularity of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal<\/a> on social media, the state government has announced internet ban in name of exams on Sunday when Kejriwal is on a Gujarat visit and is likely to make key announcements related to the 2017 polls. This is one more example of the dictatorship of the state BJP government to prevent AAP's outreach to the people.\"<\/p>\n

\n\tPAAS leader Hardik Patel tweeted, \"Internet ban on Sunday following Delhi CM's rally in Surat.\"<\/p>\n
