ShareChat cofounders Farid Ahsan and Bhanu Pratap Singh will step down from their active roles at the vernacular social media platform they started eight years ago, cofounder and CEO Ankush Sachdeva told staff in an internal email.

“Bhanu and Farid believe that all the critical business functions they are owning are now in steady hands and have decided to step down from their active roles in the company,” Sachdeva said in the mail. “They would, however, continue to be a guiding force for the company and stay on the board.”

ShareChat while Singh was chief technology officer.

Singh’s role as CTO will be handled by Gaurav Bhatia, who is currently senior vice president of engineering, while Ahsan’s role as COO will be handled by CFO Manohar Singh Charan, a company spokesperson told ET.

Charan has become one of the most senior executives at the firm, people aware of the day-to-day operations at the firm told ET. In comparison, Ahsan has been spending less time on day-to-day operations since at least last year, they added.

Both Ahsan and Singh hold 4.2% stake each in
Mohalla Tech, the parent firm of ShareChat, according data from Tracxn, a data platform for privately-held startups. Sachdeva also holds 4.2% in the firm, as of June 2022.

Sachdeva in the mail said that over the last few months, the company onboarded several senior leaders in engineering, finance, human resources and content operations, who Singh and Ahsan helped in “getting ramped up and becoming well-equipped in steering the company going forward”.

“We have a lot to accomplish in ShareChat and Moj and I am confident we have the right team to build our future,” said Sachdeva who founded the firm with Ahsan and Pratap Singh in 2015.

Mohalla Tech, which also houses short-video app Moj, sacked around 500 employees, or about 20% of its staff, earlier this month. This amounted to more than 500 people losing their job at the Bengaluru-based firm in the latest round of layoffs. In December 2022, it sacked at least 100 after it shut down its fantasy gaming vertical Jeet11, ET had reported.

Explaining the rationale behind fresh job cuts, Sachdeva had said to staff, “In hindsight, we overestimated the market growth in the highs of 2021 and underestimated the duration and intensity of the global liquidity squeeze.”

ShareChat also saw its chief commercial officer (CCO)
Ajit Varghese leaving the firm in December after a little over two years with the company. Earlier this month, Kishore Acharya, Sharechat's group marketing head, moved on from the organisation after more than two years.

In June last year, Mohalla Tech had
raised $255 million in funding from Google and others, after which it was valued at $5 billion.

The funding followed Mohalla Tech’s acquisition of MX Media-backed MX TakaTak, which was owned by Times Internet Ltd (TIL), the digital arm of the Times Group that also publishes ET. As a result of this deal, the Times Group is an investor in ShareChat.

The acquisition resulted in a combined entity, Moj-ShareChat’s short-video app and MX TakaTak, comprising 100 million creators and over 300 monthly active users. ShareChat's Moj competes with VerSe Innovation's short-video app Josh. Google is a common investor in both Mohalla Tech and VerSe Innovation.

In December 2021, it had raised $266 million from investors such as Alkeon Capital, Temasek and HarbourVest.

tech/startups/sharechat-founders-farid-ahsan-and-bhanu-pratap-singh-to-step-down-from-active-roles/sc-founders-
/image/tech/startups/sharechat-founders-farid-ahsan-and-bhanu-pratap-singh-to-step-down-from-active-roles/sc-founders-/97316347
Sharechat cofounders Bhanu Pratap Singh and Farid Ahsan will step down from their active roles at the social media platform, cofounder and CEO Ankush Sachdeva told staff in an internal email.
