\nErnest Anuja, a retired BSNL sub-division engineer (cables), Ayyappankavu telephone exchange, was found guilty by the court.
\n
\nHe was awarded three years of RI and a total fine of Rs 1.25 lakh under sections 409, 467 and 471 of IPC and under sections 13(2) r\/w 13 (1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
\n
\nSince the sentence was for three years, he was granted bail from the court. He can challenge the verdict with higher court within a year.
\n
\nThe accused while working as sub-divisional engineer from July 1 to October 31, 2005 obtained temporary advance from the department for carrying out emergency cable erection and maintenance. He misappropriated an amount of Rs77,789 dishonestly preparing fake sub-vouchers and bills showing the same as genuine by forging the signatures of contractors. He used the same for making payments towards bill expenditure from the advance received from the department, the prosecution case states.

\nThe case was registered against him in 2005 after the CBI court found that Anuja had amassed wealth disproportionate to known source of income.

Suspect still at large: The
North Paravoor<\/a> police are yet to arrest a 26-year old youth who escaped from police custody after thrashing officers in the early hours of Tuesday.

Yahiya (26), son of
Abdul Latif<\/a> of Paravoor, was taken into custody on Monday for questioning in connection with a woman missing complaint.
\n
\n\"The accused escaped while he was taken for evidence collection. He beat up a sub-inspector before fleeing,\" said the police.
\n
\nA case under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 325 B (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) were charged.
