\nOn March 31, billionaire Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio said that it had notched an unprecedented 72 million paid subscribers, out of nearly 1.20 million, and has extended its deadline by 15 days for migrating other subscribers to its Jio Prime offer.

\nThe Mumbai-based firm also added that once Jio start charging customers, users may surrender one of the connections as there was a very high percentage of the dual SIM subscribers added by Reliance Jio.

The new telecom player, a part of oil-to-logistics conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) had on September 5, 2016 launched commercial telecom services under a three-month promotional
Jio Welcome offer<\/a> which in December extended as Jio Happy New Year offer<\/a> till March 31.

\nIn a surprise move, Reliance Jio which was expected to charge for its services from April 1, 2017 extended the deadline for buying Jio’s Rs 303 (and other) plans till April 15, 2017, and according to its new scheme, the subscribers who buy Rs 99 Prime membership till April 15, 2017 with a plan of Rs 303 or higher will be eligible for the Summer Surprise offer.

\nOn February 21, Ambani said that his mega telecom business that has seen an investment of Rs 2 lakh crore has added 100 million subscribers, while on the other side, analysts maintain that migration of ‘free’ customers to a paid platform would always be a massive challenge for the new telco.

\nJio’s launch backed by free voice for lifetime and data offer however put tremendous pressure on incumbent players revenue which continue to see impact due to its extended offer, and are leaving no stone unturned to consolidate their positioning by cutting tariffs.

\nReliance Jio’s free services not only affected the industry’s sales but also profits in the December 2016 quarter. The aggregate sales of nine telecom companies that grew in single-digit in each of the quarters during June 2015 quarter to September 2016 quarter declined by 1.1% in the December 2016 quarter, Care Ratings observed.

\nThe industry’s performance, according to ratings agency, remained subdued on the profitability front, and operating margin stood at 28.43% and net margin stood at 0.34% in the December 2016 quarter.
