""NEW DELHI: India’s appetite for refurbished or second-hand smartphones is set to grow in the next two years, alongside the expanding market for new phones, driven by demand for aspirational brands such as Apple and Samsung at heavily discounted prices.

Experts and analysts expect the market for refurbished phones to rise by a compounded 27% over 2019 and 2020 as new players join existing online marketplaces Amazon,
Cashify, Shopclues and Togofogo, which posted surging growth in annual sales.

“Refurbished mobile phones category is growing at 400% year-on-year and its contribution in overall mobile phone sales has almost doubled in 2017,” an
Amazon India spokesperson said.

The US-based online retailing platform did not share numbers, but said its certified refurbished category was becoming the go-to destination for customers wanting to buy smartphones from aspirational brands including Apple, at almost 50% of the price of a new phone.

Growth rates have been high, if not similar, for others as well. Nakul Kumar, cofounder of Cashify, said sales grew three-fold over last year and expects the upside to continue this year.

Shopclues sold 5,780 refurbished phones – primarily Nokia and Samsung – in tier 2 and 3 markets every month this year, which is 35% higher than the average over 2017.

“Any
smartphone is traded at least three times in three years, which means that while the volume may be small when compared to the overall smartphone market, the size of the market can actually be around 35 million.

There are a lot of customers whose first smartphone is a used one,” Cashify’s Kumar said.

About 25% of pre-owned phones are sold in the market, of which only some are refurbished. Experts said the rising use of data has led to wider adoption of pre-owned smartphones among feature phone users.

Refurbished smartphone volumes grew by close to 25% in 2017 and crossed 12 million units in India, with more than a third accounted for by Apple and Samsung, according to Counter-point Technology Market Research. Comparatively, the segment’s growth across global markets last year was 13%, reaching almost 140 million units. India is among the fastestgrowing markets alongside Africa and Southeast Asia.

“Top electronic distributors such as Ingram Micro, Redington and
HCL as well as ecommerce players Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal have started to take a keen interest in this segment,” said Pavel Naiya, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. He expects the government’s Make in India programme to encourage companies to set up refurbishing operations in the country, which in turn will propel infrastructural growth for the segment.

Still, companies including Green-Dust are rethinking their strategies to reduce excess inventory of
devices and components, which block capital.

This is largely why Overcart and Surpluss have stopped selling refurbished phones, experts said.
