NEW DELHI: The telecom industry has become investment-oriented and an employment generator post the reforms announced by the government for the sector, said Union Minister of Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw Tuesday.

“[It is] now a sunrise sector…the industry achieved the phase one target of 5G roll outs much before the set deadline of March 31. As of today, India has covered 387 districts with 5G coverage. 1 lakh base transceiver stations (BTSs) have been installed today,” said Vaishnaw.

Reliance Jio's True 5G services are available in 277 cities, while Bharti Airtel's 5G Plus services have been launched in over 110 cities.

He said India has achieved one of its major milestones of the
Make in India vision as the first indigenous eNodeB has been deployed in Chandigarh.

The Telecom Bill, according to the top minister, will be tabled in the Parliament in the coming monsoon session, which will introduce major series of reforms in terms of spectrum, licenses, and regulation.

“We are working on all the inputs that we have received from various ministries, from various stakeholders, from the industry participants from the global bodies from other regulators in the sector, for example, DGCA has given inputs, TRAI has given inputs…So, we are taking all those inputs into consideration,” Vaishnaw said.

India, according to the minister, has been awarded the 'global government leadership award' by the London-based telco body
GSM Association (GSMA).

"The reforms introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in the
telecom sector has transformed it completely. This global award recognises those efforts."

"India is poised to become one of the largest 5G markets in the world in the coming years. The recent reforms introduced by the government of India have been pro-competitive, incentivised innovation and investment, and enhanced consumer welfare,"
GSMA has said on its website.

It noted that the policymakers have been conducting timely consultations keeping pace with technological developments such as AI and Big Data, reforming the legislation governing the telecommunications sector, using embedded SIM, rating of areas for digital connectivity and many others. "India’s digital transformation journey has been remarkable," GSMA said.
