NEW DELHI: Offline mobile retailers have countered Xiaomi India head Manu Jain’s comments that offline inventory issues were largely due to supply shortage and said that the Chinese brand is deliberately delaying inventory of newly launched products and is diverting it to its own channel along with other ecommerce partners to save margins.

AIMRA, which represents 1.50 lakh mainline mobile retailers of India, also said that Korean brand
Samsung is also involved in a similar practice, and isn’t providing certain in-demand models at all to offline partners.

Offline retailers have also accused
Oppo of selling “end of life” smartphone models in the online channel with deep discounts to divert customers from the offline channel.

Xiaomi has promised to provide inventory offline within a week but the situation hasn’t changed in the last few months. They don’t provide inventory of latest models to offline partners and delay it for almost a month and largely give inventory of older models,” Arvinder Khurana, the national president of All India Mobile Retailer Association (AIMRA) told ET.

Khurana also said that there is a price disparity as well as
Xiaomi is selling these phones Rs 500 cheaper in the online channel.

Responding to concerns of offline partners, Xiaomi India head Manu Jain last week told ET that these concerns were due mainly to the overall shortage of products due to production challenges.

“It's a very natural human phenomenon. When we have demand of 120 and I am getting only 90. I always feel bad that I am losing out on business opportunities. I understand some of our partners might have felt very bad because on one hand for two months, you have to pay full rent, salaries, you have zero income and this shortage because India factories are still ramping up,” Jain said.

Xiaomi claimed that the offline channel will contribute 50% of overall sales by the end of this year.

Khurana, however, countered Jain’s explanation by saying that every step taken by the Chinese brand is taking away business from the offline retail. “They are rather increasing their GMV for the online business.”

He also accused Samsung of using offline retail databases to drive online sales along and not maintaining price parity and raised offline inventory issues. “They are sending messages to customers to go to their online platform to get more offers. They are diverting our customers.”

“These brands need to support the retailers by providing the same models to all channels at the same time,” he added.

In a September 1 letter to Oppo India President Elvis Zhou, AIMRA asked the Chinese company to stop selling “end of life” and special variant models with deep discounts, terming the practice unfair and ethical towards offline partners.

“...the retailers are working hard in these challenging times of a COVID threat putting their
lives at risk for the livelihood of the family and employees. This is an absolute breach of trust
and against the spirit of the law,” AMIRA said in its letter.

The retailer body said that mainline retailers are very capable of selling end of life products at the same special discounted prices that “online platforms enjoy.”

“When Online platforms market the EOL product at such a low price, it gives an earlier buyer of the same product a feeling of having been cheated by the brand. This was what went wrong with Samsung premium customers and resulted in a decline of the brand's loyalty,” AIMRA said.

Oppo, as per AIMRA, had given a written commitment to its mainline partners of not indulging in any kind of exclusivity or preferential sale.

“..but unfortunately, an OPPO Reno 2f 6+256 GB for 17999/- and OPPO A12 4+64GB Rs. 11490/- was given exclusively and also End-of-Life Product OPPO A9 4+128 GB for Rs.13990/- & OPPO F11 Pro 6+128 GB for Rs.17990/- to Flipkart...we expect you to maintain a level playing field while doing business with both the channels and not indulge in trade practices that simply take away customers, snatch the livelihood of mainline retailers and their families,” the body said in its letter.
