NEW DELHI: JioPhone Next users’ average monthly spend increased by Rs 160 on average with the new affordable 4G smartphone developed by Jio and internet major Google, which could potentially lead to improvements in the telco’s average revenue per user (ARPU), revealed a survey conducted by Swiss brokerage firm UBS.

“While this includes the EMI for the device (we believe), the increase in ARPU (assuming 2G to 4G migration) is likely to be in the range of Rs60-100 in our view. This increased spend could potentially lead to ARPU improvements for Jio, even without further tariff hikes,” according to the findings by ‘UBS Evidence Lab Pulse’ survey.

As of September end, Jio's ARPU was Rs 143.6, while Airtel and Vi clocked in ARPU of Rs 153 and Rs 109 respectively.

The device went on sale on Diwali last year with an upfront payment of Rs 1,999 and the rest to be paid via easy monthly installments over 18 or 24 months.

It offers some segment-first features such as an optimized version of Android, called the ‘Pragati OS’, content translation read-back in 10 Indian languages, a Translate Now feature, Read Aloud, in-built camera optimizations, Google Voice assistant support, amongst others.

As per the findings, 54% of the respondents purchased the
JioPhone Next at an upfront price of Rs 6,499 without any financing while 30% bought the device with the 18-months installment option (upfront Rs 1,999).

“This indicates a preference to pay upfront or minimize the number of instalments (there were very low takers for the 24-month option). In our view, this will reduce time users are locked with the operator but also implies the product will likely only be able to convert the high-end segment within the current 2G users in India,” it noted.

66% of respondents in India are likely to switch to the JioPhone Next in the next three months while 33% of the respondents have already purchased the device, the findings showed.

Interest levels are almost similar across customers of all telcos, it noted. Interest is however among feature phone users/basic phone users, addressing Jio’s objective to accelerate migration of 2G subscribers to 4G, it observed.
