Mass layoffs are hitting the tech sector as a result of economic recession concerns, despite a hiring spree during the pandemic that saw over 150,000 people employed in 2022, according to a study by 365 DataScience. The trend continues in 2023 with over 68,500 new job cuts reported in January alone.
According to a 365 DataScience report in January 2023, Twitter<\/a> laid off the largest proportion of its workforce, with 58% affected. Other tech firms' layoffs are a fraction of their total workforce and more cuts are expected in 2023 to approach pre-pandemic levels. The study found that nearly 90% of the layoffs in the US occurred in big tech firms.
Interestingly, the largest group of laid-off employees in the study did not hold tech jobs, with 27.8% working in HR & Talent sourcing and software engineers coming in second with 22.1%. However, the roles in the IT sector which were part of layoffs held different percentages depending on the tech company itself.
The 365 DataScience reported 23.7% of the laid-off employees from Twitter<\/a> were software engineers. The number increases to 28.8% in Amazon<\/a>, and reaches 35.5% in Google<\/a>, the highest in big tech. Other tech roles included in layoffs were program manager, product manager, sales, cloud & data centers, data analyst, and data scientist among others.
Approximately 90% of the layoffs in the sample taken by 365 DataScience took place in the US, where the majority of major tech companies have their headquarters. In contrast, the numbers show that 0.9% of Indian workers were laid off.
Yet the layoffs are yet not slowing down. Layoffs.fyi<\/a>, an online tracker monitoring job losses in the tech industry, reports that 658 tech businesses have fired around 191,416 employees so far this year, compared to 164,411 last year.
