Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with Infosys chief executive Salil Parekh on Monday on the critical issue of persistent glitches plaguing the new income tax portal for more than two months after launch.

The finance minister is learnt to have given a deadline to the company for fixing the issues, said people in the know, even as senior executives of the company held discussions with officials in the
finance ministry and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to iron out the problems being faced by taxpayers on the portal.

Infosys CEO had been summoned by Sitharaman after the I-T e-filing portal built by the Bengaluru-based company had been inaccessible from Saturday and came back online only late Sunday night.

Taxpayers using the portal since June 8, when it went live, have faced technical glitches, errors and challenges in accessing it or several functions within the website, drawing their ire as well as that of the
finance ministry.

The issues persist despite consistent assurances from the company.

Infosys said in a Twitter post on Sunday evening that the income tax e-filing portal that was down for maintenance over the weekend was operational for users effective late Sunday evening.

"The emergency maintenance of the @IncomeTaxIndia portal has concluded and the portal is live. We regret any inconvenience caused to taxpayers," Infosys wrote on its India business
twitter handle.

On Saturday, Infosys had said on Twitter that the portal was inaccessible due to “planned maintenance”, which it changed to “emergency maintenance” on Sunday morning.

The finance minister and officials from the
department of revenue had a detailed interaction with the company’s top brass to resolve the matter earlier as well. The meeting, which included tax practitioners, highlighted several glitches with regard to services on the e-filing portal 2.0.

These included its slow loading speed, absence of previously saved forms of earlier assessment years, digital signature certificates not getting updated, tedious filing of TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) returns, slow downloading of ITR forms and issues with information on the TDS that is deducted.

Filing of income tax forms for deducting tax on payments made to non-residents also caused issues for taxpayers.
