Kolkata: Reliance Jio added the highest number of active mobile users among India’s top telcos in January 2023, which, analysts said, was helped by strong gains in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. They added that this also indicated that the Mukesh Ambani-led telco is acquiring quality customers and is not impacted by SIM consolidation in the sector.

Jio added 3.5 million active users, taking its January active user base to 394 million, latest customer data put out by the
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed.

The pace of rival
Bharti Airtel’s active user additions was steady but slower at 1.3 million, taking its January active user base to 366 million. Vodafone Idea continued to lose active users – 0.5 million – further reducing its base to 209 million.

Active, or visitor location register (VLR), data put out every month by Trai reflects the number of subscribers actively using a mobile network.

Jio extended its lead over Airtel with a 38.5% share of the active user market in January, against the Sunil Mittal-telco’s 35.7%. Loss-making Vi’s active user share fell a few decimal points to 20.4%.

The telecom
industry’s overall active user base rose by around 4 million, month-on-month, to 1025 million, helped by Jio and Airtel’s net gains.

“Jio’s VLR proportion improved to 92.6% in January ‘23 from 92.1% in December ’22… Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh witnessed upticks,” Emkay Research said.

Analysts said the growth in Jio's VLR ratio implied improving customer quality.

Airtel’s active user adds, though, have slowed down in January -- compared to 6 million additions in December 2022 – after it sharply hiked base prepaid rates by 57% in Odisha and Haryana last November and eventually extended the move nationally to all 22 circles.

ICICI Securities expects Airtel to see bigger churn levels on the active users front in coming months once the full impact of the higher priced recharge cycle hits home.

J M Financial said the fall in Vi’s active user base continues the declining trend over the past many months due to churn in the lower average revenue per user (ARPU) segments, especially after base prepaid tariff hikes the telco had taken back in July/November 2021.

Jio, Airtel gain subscribers at Vodafone Idea's expense in January 2023: Trai

Airtel continues to lead on the wireless broadband user additions front, recording an increase of 2.8 million in January 2023, followed by Jio and Vi reporting 1.7 million and 1.1 million gains respectively. “This is the fifth successive month when Bharti has added more wireless broadband subscribers than Jio,” said Emkay.

Jio, though, maintained its market leadership in wired broadband. It added 0.19 million customers to its JioFibre service in January, taking its fixed broadband user base to 7.8 million. Airtel added 0.14 million such users, growing its wired broadband subscriber base to 5.9 million. State-run BSNL added fewer users -- 0.07 million -- and remained at third spot with 4.2 million subscribers, underlining its inability to compete effectively with Jio and Airtel.

“Jio had a 23.7% share of the home broadband subscriber base end-January, compared with 17.7% for Airtel and 12.6% for BSNL,” ICICI Securities said, analysing Trai data.
