New Delhi: Indus Towers Thursday said it had made a provision of Rs 1770.9 crore towards 'doubtful' debt in the fiscal second quarter, a sharp 43% rise on-quarter, as the telecom infrastructure provider has yet to receive payment from a key customer, which is understood to be cash-strapped Vodafone Idea. Indus added that it has agreed to the customer’s proposal for softer payment terms.

In its earnings statement for the July-September quarter, Indus also warned that the potential loss of that “significant customer” if it fails to continue as a going concern or Indus’s failure to get new clients could have an adverse effect on the tower company’s business, results of operations and financial conditions.

Indus didn’t name the customer, but
Bharti Airtel and loss-making Vodafone Idea are its two major clients. Airtel, which owns 47.76% stake in Indus, has been making its payments. The tower company has already warned Vodafone Idea of cutting access to its towers, unless its dues are paid. ET has reported that Vodafone Idea owes nearly Rs7,000 crore to Indus.

“During the last quarter, the customer had informed the company that a funding plan was under finalization with its lenders and had proposed a payment plan to the company to pay part of the monthly billing till December 2022 and 100% of the amounts billed from January 2023,” Indus said, adding that it has agreed to the part payment proposal.

Under that proposal, Vi will pay its dues outstanding as of December 31, 2022, between January 2023 and July 2023, and 100% of its dues from January 2023 onwards.

The dues from Vodafone Idea hurt Indus’s second quarter net profit which slid 44% on-year to Rs 872 crores. Consolidated revenue though rose 16% on-year to Rs 7,967 crore. However, its operating cash flows went down 39% on-year to Rs 1,277 crore despite an 8.2% decrease in its trade receivables to Rs 6,499 crore.

"Our financial performance continues to be impacted by the collection challenges we face from one of our customers," said N Kumar, chairman, Indus Towers.

Indus said that Vi was one of the companies which bid for
5G spectrum, spending Rs 18,799.3 crore, which has strengthened its ability to continue as a going concern.

Separately, Indus’s board on Thursday approved raising of funds through issuance of non-convertible debentures (
NCD) of up to Rs 2,000 crores in or more tranches on private placement basis.

"Launch of 5G services by two major operators within three months of spectrum auction underlines the strong role of infrastructure players in providing 5G-ready sites at speed. At Indus Towers, we stay excited and prepared to capitalize on the 5G opportunity," Kumar said.
