(PTI Photo\/Kamal Kishore)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NEW DELHI: India will achieve 100% coverage for 5G services<\/a> by the end of December 2024, even as today, 5G<\/a> services have been launched in 387 districts by telecom players across the country, said Union Minister of Communications<\/a> Ashwini Vaishnaw Tuesday.

“By the end of December 2024, we should achieve 100% (
5G<\/a>) coverage,” Vaishnaw said.

To date,
Reliance Jio<\/a> has launched its True 5G services<\/a> in 277 cities while Bharti Airtel<\/a> has launched its 5G Plus services in over 110 cities. Both telecom operators aim to complete their 5G network roll outs within 15 months.

Jio is deploying a 5G standalone (SA) network, whereas rival Airtel is deploying a 5G non-standalone (NSA) network.

The Centre had set up five task forces to explore how can telecom manufacturing progress in a “focused way”, said Vaishnaw, adding that the task forces have submitted their reports and they will be reviewed soon.

On the other hand, the minister said that
6G task forces<\/a> have developed a roadmap for technology. “We have identified certain technologies to work on so as to create a greater impact.”

The antenna technology for instance, the minister said, will change drastically. “Massive MIMO, that part we are working on, and how will communication happen between the network and the devices? We are working on areas like these.”

India has 100 patents in
6G<\/a> now, Vaishnaw said. “So this is a journey which is going to be very exciting to see.”

In December 2021, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) set up task forces for
6G<\/a>. The task groups are headed by Bhaskar Ramamurthy, director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Chennai, Abhay Karandikar, director, IIT-Kanpur, Bharadwaj Amrutur, director, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Kiran Kumar Kuchi, director, IIT-Hyderabad on multi platform for next generation networks, spectrum policy<\/a>, multi-disciplinary innovative solutions, and devices respectively.

Group for financing research and development is headed by Ashok Kumar Tiwari, Member (Technology), Digital Communications Commission (DCC), and a task force on international standards is headed by NG Subramaniam, chairman of the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI).

Vaishnaw said 99% of phones are made in India, and stated that mobile phone exports from India this year are going to exceed $10 billion. “Now there is the entire component ecosystem here, as volumes have increased. In the coming years, you will see exponential growth in electronics manufacturing and telecom manufacturing.”
