India is moving faster than other countries when it comes to hybrid cloud adoption, said Jason Jameson, vice president, IBM Public Cloud, Asia Pacific. In India, the number of industries that are driving the focus on cloud is a lot broader, he said, going beyond banking and financial services to automobile, manufacturing and telecom companies.

IBM is betting big on hybrid cloud to drive the next wave of growth, bolstered in large part by its acquisition of Red Hat a few years ago and India is an important geography. The first wave of workloads that moved to cloud – about 20% -- was more quick and easy cloud native development. “The 80% that is remaining is when the harder stuff starts and this is where India is really starting to breach the chasm,” said Jameson.

A recent study by the
IBM Institute found that Indian firms allocated about 17% of their IT spend towards Cloud and they intend to increase the share of spend on hybrid Cloud from 42% to 49 % by 2023. The majority of their cloud budgets are being allocated to hybrid cloud platforms even as their public cloud spend is set to reduce from 50% today to 43% in the same time period.

"To continue to innovate on the cloud platform, three areas will be important to organisations – industry and vertical experience, access to a Cloud ecosystem and a focus on co-creation,” said Jameson. “These are the areas of focus for us and we see big opportunities for India,” he added.

IBM has modernised its own core applications and portfolio for Red Hat OpenShift.

In August, IBM announced a $1 billion fund which it would invest to grow the hybrid cloud ecosystem over the next three years. In India, the company is working with IT services firms like Infosys,
Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services to help move their client’s workloads to the Cloud. While Wipro is expanding its IBM Hybrid Cloud practice, HCL Technologies has an IBM Ecosystem Unit which works with clients across industries, including regulated ones like financial services to develop digital and cloud native solutions. Persistent Systems has over 2,000 engineers working on containerisation and Kubernetes, focusing on IBM Cloud Paks on Red Hat OpenShift.

IBM has worked with companies like Volvo Eicher to streamline its vendor management and issue resolution systems and Avanse Financial Services to move its core business applications to the Cloud.
