India is home to about 27% of the Google Cloud developer community, a senior executive said, making the country an important region for the tech company.

The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to the
cloud and this trend was expected to continue for the next decade.

“India is a developer hub and, while we enable them, we also learn from them as they give us feedback on how the platform can work better and the deep engagement in India is part of that,” said Urs Hölzle,
SVP Infrastructure, Google Cloud, who is in India for Cloud Next, Google’s flagship event, which takes place in Bengaluru this week.

In India, Google is working with companies like Mahindra & Mahindra on various initiatives such as handling online bookings for its recently launched sport utility vehicle Scorpio, enabling about 100,000 bookings within the first 30 minutes.

As companies move from simply hosting their data on the Cloud to working with Google to innovate and create new solutions, demand for Cloud-led solutions continues to be high in India, said Bikram Singh Bedi, managing director of Google Cloud India.

“We're starting to see big scale coming out of a number of these customer opportunities that we are partnering on,” Bedi said.

Google recently got certification from the
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for its Delhi data centre, which will allow it to work with state-owned enterprises and regulated companies from that location. Its Mumbai centre was certified by the ministry earlier.

Google will launch a slew of product innovations and solutions aimed at making the Google Cloud ecosystem more open, and safer for the developers with multiple features focused on cybersecurity. The new launches will cover four key areas - data cloud, open infrastructure cloud, collaboration cloud and trusted cloud.

“There is a lot of focus on the open ecosystem, and this is one of the key reasons that is driving success for us globally, as well as in India,” said Bedi.

Google has stepped up hiring in India over the last two years and would continue to hire more as demand remains high. The challenge, said Hölzle, was the lack of trained professionals, both in India, and globally. This was slowing the pace at which companies could undertake the shift to the Cloud.

“It’s still new and everyone is still building capacity,” he said.

Meanwhile, the economic situation in some regions is causing people to accelerate (Cloud adoption) because they realise they need for cost efficiencies, he said.

Google is also doubling down on expanding its learning programme.

In India, the number of Google Cloud learners has grown by seven times over the last two years – the fastest anywhere in the world.

Hölzle said the company intends to train 40 million people in Google Cloud Skills in the next few years. So far, one million people have been certified under this programme globally.
