NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajiv Chandrashekhar Tuesday said that India could achieve a production milestone of $300 billion worth of electronics by 2025-26, and termed it as an unprecedented opportunity for the country.

"Prime Minister's efforts over the last few years leading to a vision of $300 billion of electronics production is a real opportunity for India. Industry believes in that and we will support the industry," Chandrashekhar said while releasing a vision document and action plan to promote domestic manufacturing.

There was hardly an electronics industry flourishing in 2014, which has come to $76 billion value just before Covid-19 outbreak, he said, adding that the industry is now facing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where global value chains for electronics are rapidly diversifying.

"The countries are looking at trusted suppliers and sources. For India, it is an unprecedented opportunity," Chandrashekhar said.

The
Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), according to him, has been working to make electronics manufacturing efforts successful and global, and added that India is well poised to grow in the electronics sector.

The vision document, which is an ambitious forward-looking strategy, aims to integrate India with the global value chain or GVC, and bats for export promotion with World Trade Organisation (
WTO)-compliant incentive schemes.

"India is a large market. We consume 4-5% of the global value of mobile devices, and have 18% of population share worldwide with a contribution of 3.2% to the global GDP today," Hari Om Rai, co-founder & chairman,
Lava International said.

We have to look at exports which is the key, and unlike China, India did not develop enterprise-scale opportunities. With new goals, Rai said that the industry is taking a strategy beyond
Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) to serve the world.

"Electronics manufacturing collapsed in 2014, and we have come a long way. We have decided to come out with a vision document when Shri Rajeev Chandrashekhar took over as a minister," Pankaj Mohindroo, president,
India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) said.

Nearly 80% of the electronics exports are linked to GVC while India's share in GVC-related exports stands merely at 1.5%, the finding revealed.
