Lucknow: Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (Lesa) is set to kickstart a drive against telecom and cable TV operator companies for illegally using electric poles for laying overhead fibre-optic cables.

These illegally laid cables are said to be one of the main reasons for fire incidents in some places in the past few days.

As per a conservative estimate, nearly 800km long web of optic cable is hanging on 27,950 electric poles across the city.

On Monday, Lesa removed 3.5km long fibre-optic cable from four electric poles on Latouche Road.

Lesa executive engineer (
Aminabad) Ramesh Chandra Srivastava said, “We have recorded 80km long unauthorised fibre-optic cable on Lesa’s electric poles in Aminabad circle.”

“The menace can be gauged from the fact that nearly half an hour after our team removed optic cable from poles in Aminabad, engineers of a telecom company restored optic cable network on the poles,” Srivastava said.

Lesa chief executive engineer,
cis-Gomti, Vipin Jain, said the dangling wires were causing fire incidents in densely populated commercial and residential areas. “The fire that broke out near a shopping complex at Gwyne Road in the first week of April was due to this wire,” he added.

“We are issuing notices to telecom and cable TV companies to remove unauthorised cables from Lesa poles, or we will bring them down,” he said.

According to Lesa officials, telecom and cable TV networks have to pay Rs 1,610 per pole to lay optic cables and have to get third party insurance in case of any damage or accident caused by these cables.
