NEW DELHI: India’s Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj said the Central government will find a solution to the issue of telecom dues, CNBC TV-18 reported.

Earlier in the day, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reportedly said the moratorium on spectrum dues cannot be extended “unilaterally” and will require the finance ministry’s nod and the latter has expressed apprehensions about the financial implications of such a move.

Previously, the government had allowed a moratorium on spectrum dues for FY21 and FY22 while the next tranche of non-AGR spectrum dues will be payable from April 2022 onwards.

Last month,
Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla wrote to the Central government offering to hand over his stake in the debt-laden Vodafone Idea to any public sector entity or domestic financial institution considering the financial crisis looming before the company.

Birla, who has recently resigned as
Vodafone Idea’s non-executive chairman and director, had also sought clarity on AGR, a moratorium on spectrum dues and floor pricing while highlighting that the telco would be driven to an “irretrievable point of collapse” without immediate government support.

The
Supreme Court on July 23 rejected Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Tata Teleservices’ plea seeking recomputation of the AGR-related dues.

Vodafone Idea has paid Rs 7,854 crore out of over Rs 58,000 crore it owes to the government as AGR dues while Airtel has AGR dues worth Rs 43,980 crore, of which it has paid Rs 18,004 crore.

Both telcos are planning to file a review petition following the latest ruling of the apex court.
