The financial services, retail and telecom sectors displayed the high discrepancy percentage in background verification in the quarter ending December 2020, finds a survey.

The report also states that discrepancy percentages across other sectors like banking, BPO, e-commerce and logistics, engineering and infrastructure, FMCG, healthcare, manufacturing and pharma were also way above
industry average in the quarter.

According to the Q4 trends report quantifying the
hiring trends and qualifying the nature of discrepancy patterns in India, curated by US-headquartered background screening firm First Advantage India, the increase in case level discrepancy percentages in the financial services sector was as high as 16.9%, way above 11.9% in the previous quarter. Discrepancy percentage in retail stood at 9.4% as compared to 4.7% in Q3 and 37 out of every 100 candidates screened in the telecom sector were discrepant in Q4.

Overall, however, discrepancy percentages were marginally lower in Q4 at 8.6% as compared to Q3 which was 9.4%.

“In the corporate world, background verification is the essential ingredient which has deep roots in business risk, compliance and data security. With our digital initiatives driven by modern technology and alternate screening solutions, we have transformed our processes to adapt to changing environmental and economic conditions,” Amit Singh, head - commercial, First Advantage India, told ET.

A study of
education discrepancies shows that suspect institutions form the biggest chunk in this quarter at 46%, fake documents at 32%, and discrepancies like ‘other false education’ were at 22%. (Other false education includes ‘did not officially complete the course, registration or credential, or membership expired, etc.’)

The discrepancy trend across zones in India have also displayed an interesting pattern. The discrepancy rate for education checks is the highest in the northern zone of India whereas the southern zone of India displays significantly higher discrepancy rate for employment and address checks.

“The Covid-19 pandemic is changing the way we approach employment background checks. To meet the hiring needs, companies transferred the verification process from standard to digital mode of verification for address and employment checks respectively. We are therefore carrying out alternate methods of verification too by using automated solutions and advanced GPS technology to match the geographical coordinates of the address provided by the candidate with the coordinates captured via the mobile device from where the candidate is physically present. Employment verification is being carried out by PAN, TAN and PF validation,” said Singh.

The report also finds that the quarter ending December ’20 has shown a recovery of 23% as compared to the previous quarter. Sectors like consulting, insurance, IT and manufacturing have not only recorded a sharp recovery but have shown the year end quarter in a much higher volume.
