Consumer goods makers have started to reduce prices of products such as televisions, laptops, smartphones, apparel and some daily necessities — such as biscuits and staples — to pass on the benefits of a drop in input costs in the past few weeks. The industry expects this to revive demand in the approach to the festive season after continued price hikes since the pandemic.

Brands such as LG, Samsung and Sony have dropped prices of televisions by 5-8% in the last few weeks, while mid-to-premium laptops are Rs 1,500-2,000 cheaper, industry executives said. In the case of smartphones, brands are offering 4-5% discounts.

Edible oil prices have dropped by 15-20%, while manufacturers have reduced prices of large packs of biscuits by 10-15% discounts.

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry executives said promotions will rise in the next few months.

“We have started passing the benefit of reduction in input costs on bigger biscuit packs from August 15 by offering a 10-15% discount,” said Mayank Shah, senior category head at Parle Products, the largest packaged food company. “We will monitor input cost for some more time before deciding on an across-the-range price drop.”

Consumer budgets are stressed and incentives are needed to get people to shop during the festive season, said Lalit Agarwal, managing director of leading value fashion retailer V-Mart Retail.

“We are planning to roll back prices by 15-20% and hoping it translates into higher demand, at least in the rural and semi-urban markets,” he said. “While margin percentage will be under pressure due to price cuts, increased sales will help maintain absolute gross margins for us.”

COOLING COMPONENT PRICES
Consumer electronics have started to become cheaper as companies try to clear out unsold inventory, helped by a cooling down of component prices. Prices of semiconductor chips and open cell panels used in televisions have crashed by up to 80% due to a global fall in demand.

For instance, a 32-inch open cell panel has dropped to $27, from $100. For the first time since the pandemic, brands are dropping prices in categories such as
TVs and laptops, said Pulkit Baid, director at leading electronics retail chain Great Eastern. “Price correction with festive offers will help improve sales,” he said.

The increase in unsold inventory levels of smartphones has also led brands to drop prices by 4-5%, said Tarun Pathak, research director at cellphone industry researcher Counterpoint Technology Market Research. “Brands will go aggressive during the festive season with higher discounts, especially in the sub-$150 price segment, where unsold inventory pressure is more,” he said.

RELIEF AFTER LONG
The price relief comes after nearly nine quarters of sustained price hikes or shrinkage in pack sizes due to increased input costs. Consumer inflation hit an all-time high in April, in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, dampening demand. Still, despite these cuts, most prices are still above pre-pandemic levels, since the increases were to the tune of 20-25% in the past two years.

“Companies are looking to boost demand in the coming festive season as this is the first normal period after two years of Covid stress,” said Anil Chugh, head of the foods business at
Wipro Consumer Care. “However, they will be looking more at offering promotions than price cuts to spur demand.”

Amid softening global prices, the central government recently asked edible oil companies to cut prices by Rs 10-15 per litre after a Rs 15-25 drop in the last three to four months. There has also been a 25-50% price correction in two crucial commodities — crude and palm oil — used by the FMCG industry.

Apparel retailers, especially in cities, have posted strong double-digit growth due to pent-up demand, led by office reopenings, weddings, events and increased social gatherings. As a result, not every brand will opt for price cuts to chase demand.

“There is no need for a price intervention, as the demand even for full-priced merchandise is strong," said Devarajan Iyer, chief executive of departmental store chain Lifestyle International. “Fresh merchandise, and not prices, will drive sales during the festive season.”
