He said that with 5G, there will be a need for more local storage at the edge and endpoints. Edited Excerpts

Does storage become even more critical in the 5G era? Can it become a bottleneck to performance in certain conditions?

The adoption of 4G/LTE in the last decade has led to the proliferation of social media, video streaming, gaming, and many other applications, which have resulted in a humongous growth of data.

5G is even more exciting. It could be one of the most prominent technologies of the decade. Three of the most exciting application areas or use cases for 5G are eMBB (
enhanced mobile broadband), URLLC (Ultra-reliable low-latency communication), and mMTC (Massive machine-type communication). These use cases can generate an unprecedented amount of data, much more than 4G/LTE. Most importantly, this data needs to be processed and stored at the edge and cloud to extract insights.

The immediate benefits of 5G, such as higher data rates, lower latencies, and higher network capacities, throw unique challenges to the storage hardware interfaces that companies like Western Digital will have to address. Otherwise, your 5G experience will be reduced to the characteristics of the weakest link.

We hear
edge computing and edge storage are crucial to a 5G future; why?

New applications such as remote healthcare, connected vehicles, and industrial automation need real-time data processing and storage. While the cloud will still exist to provide large-scale analytics at a central location, edge processing can happen close to the location where the data is actually collected from the endpoints and sensors. This will improve the efficiency, performance, and safety of the network. Overall, it will also reduce costs and be easier to maintain. In addition, the technologies for processing and storage should be located near one another to get real value from the data. Hence, edge storage becomes crucial along with edge processing.

5G will have a domino effect on existing network infrastructure. With 5G, more intelligence and computing power will migrate from the cloud to the edge.

Will a different kind of storage be needed? If yes, why?

Storage was not the bottleneck for 4G networks. However, this changes dramatically with 5G. 5G use cases are bringing architectural changes into the storage designs. Considering the amount of data generation and the use cases, 5G needs storage
devices with higher capacities, newer interfaces, more random read/write performance, longer data retention, and increased endurance. Let's take an example of today's standard hardware interfaces for embedded products. While continuing to serve as the storage backbone for many embedded applications, eMMC data transfer bandwidth is lower compared to the newer JEDEC standard, UFS3.1 which were first deployed in smartphones and were designed to deliver higher speeds in line with 5G requirements.

Another example of an older storage interface for SSDs is SATA, which can be a bottleneck for 5G Edge processing.

Due to the fast speeds of 5G, we don't need much local storage, right?

On the contrary. With 5G, you'll need more local storage at the edge and endpoints. Even after the adoption of
5G networks worldwide, we will face network challenges. Connectivity could be slow, intermittent, or even non-existent sometimes. So, for mission-critical and life-saving applications, you cannot wait for a data centre to respond to a query. So, local processing and storage, along with the transfer of only specific results back to a central data center is the answer.

What's next?

5G changes the storage architecture of both the data centre and the edge/endpoints. We are well-positioned to help customers with the right storage requirements. The company continues to innovate for its customers' new applications and workloads and reduce their costs. It is also heavily invested in R&D, designing, and manufacturing of HDDs (hard drives) and flash memory products enabling it to see a larger view of storage across products and technologies.

For the next-generation 5G enterprise data centers, We are committed to the development of massive capacity JBOD's (over 2 Petabytes in a single box), NVMe over Fabric (over 600TB in a single box), and cutting-edge technologies, such as OptiNAND, Triple Stage actuator and Zoned Namespaces SSDs.

For the 5G endpoints and edge, We are continuously innovating in 3D NAND flash cell, firmware, and ASIC technology to deliver high-performance UFS 3.1 embedded flash drives in BGA packages, extended temperature grade SD cards, and industrial NVMe SSDs.

三个最令人兴奋的应用领域或用例5 g eMBB (增强的移动宽带),URLLC(飞船稳定性极强,低延迟通信),mMTC(大规模机械化的沟通)。
