<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NAIROBI: Ethiopia's Ethio Telecom<\/a> posted an 8.5% rise in revenue to 61.3 billion birr ($1.18 billion) in the year to June 30, the state-run company said on Thursday.

Subscribers to Ethio Telecom's financial service, known as Telebirr<\/a>, launched in May last year, have grown to 21.8 million out of its 66.6 million total subscribers.

Ethio Telecom's 4G network, which previously covered only the capital Addis Ababa, now covers 136 cities and towns, with 5G<\/a> services launched in six mobile stations in the capital, it said.

In March, the finance ministry postponed a plan to partially privatise Ethio Telecom because citing economic conditions.

The government had launched a tendering process in June 2021 for a proposed sale of a 40% stake as part of the government's broader plan to open up the economy.

A consortium led by Kenya's Safaricom<\/a>, Vodafone<\/a> , and Japan's Sumitomo<\/a>, is in the process of setting up Ethiopia's second telecoms network, whose phased operations are expected to start in August.

In December, the Ethiopian Communication Authority<\/a> (ECA), said it had suspended a tender process for a second international<\/a> telecommunications licence but would relaunch it in the \"near future\".
