NEW DELHI: Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is in talks with Indian telecom operators to deploy automation technologies to help them bring down costs. It is also looking to grow its R&D centre in India to support the development of 5G core and private 5G products.

HPE also sees the Indian market as a “rich” opportunity for its private 5G network as it looks to work with local telecom operators to tap various industry verticals.

The company recently expanded its connected cloud-to-Edge offering after acquiring Italian private cellular network technology provider Athonet to push forward its private 5G services.

“...the acquisition is still brand new, we still have to go through regulatory approval before full closure, but we will see the Indian market as a really rich opportunity, but in particular, working with the telecom sector to take out into the various industry verticals.,” Tom Craig, global vice president and general manager, of the communications technology group, at HPE, told ET in an exclusive interaction.

“Our preferred model is to use HPE, constituent technology, and the service model of the carrier and their spectrum, in some cases, to create an end-to-end solution.”

The company, however, is open to providing its technology and the managed service to work with enterprises directly if they want to self-manage and self-deploy private 5G networks without the help of telecom operators.

“But, I think there is a lot of value and experience in the telecom sector that can be leveraged by enterprises more than just deployment,” he said, adding that the telecom industry has experience in radio frequency planning and service management.

With its private 5G focus and Athonet acquisition, HPE aims to help telecom operators find new sources of growth. “Private 5G will be one of the key enablers for new revenue growth in the telecom sector. And the reason is that it will fundamentally allow some quite transformational business process improvement in various industries. Whole new business models are opening up, and industries can create new opportunities for both the telecom sector,” he added.

As per HPE, the telecom industry will spend $650 billion over the next seven years on
5G deployment globally. “At the same time, the industry is scrambling for the use cases to monetize this investment. Without any question, private 5g with Edge computing applications is a phenomenal opportunity for the telecom sector,” he added.

“Manufacturing industries are employing in-field robotics, which is a huge opportunity. Mining, port authorities, defence applications, health applications, transportation and logistics, and asset tracking all need ultra-high availability and ultra-reliable low-latency connectivity. And the big difference here is when we deploy Private 5G, it allows high asset mobility within the space you're trying to monitor…there's a clear opportunity for brand-new business models,” he added.

Leveraging Aruba’s Enterprise Reach

HPE also intends to capitalise on Aruba’s reach within the enterprise space to drive private 5G business.

“There's a lot of enterprise customers on an Aruba platform today. Here we provide the software-defined wide area network, in-building Wi-Fi, firewall and security…naturally, some customers will say they would like to light up 5G as an option in their location. If they want to go that way, then absolutely through Aruba, we can offer them that solution,” Craig said.

Automaton Potential and Indian Telcos

HPE is currently in talks with
Indian telecom operators to deploy automation technologies to help them reduce capital and operating expenditures. It is also in talks with telcos in the space of RAN automation.

“The telecom sector has gone through various waves such as outsourcing, right-shorting passive network sharing, active network sharing…there have been many cycles of cost reduction. Our belief is the next genuine leap in cost efficiency, and OpEx reduction has to come by enabling automation technologies,” Craig added. “Because of low ARPUs in India, the need for zero-touch automation is more acute than anywhere else.”

For telcos, HPE offers solutions like intelligent assurance, network monitoring, network management, and orchestration to help telcos reduce operating expenditures. “These are building blocks to deliver automation in the telco space.”

The executive revealed that HPE is already deploying its intelligent assurance technologies for automation for Vodafone Idea. “All operators in India will have the compute infrastructure technology deployed in the core networks.”

“We would hopefully see HPE deployments of our technology with all of the operators in India over the coming one-two year,” he added.

Craig said that deploying network automation technology is important in India. “if you can do automation technology work in India, you can make it work anywhere in the world because of the complexity of the infrastructure and systems that they have to support…and there is the geographic diversity.”

The executive said that the opportunities are “huge” in India for everyone regarding private 5G and network ops automation. “On this RAN piece, I think when you look at the global market of the journey from appliance to V to ORAN, I expect that India will do more in that space than almost any other country in the next 12 to 24 months,” Craig added.

R&D Commitment

HPE will also increase its commitment to telecom research and development in India in the next 12 months. Its biggest R&D centre globally is based in India. “In fact, of my global locations, all of the growth I will see over the next 12 months on R&D resources will be in India.”

He said that very few places in the world come close to India's technology and telecommunications market literacy. “That’s why my strategic products like network ops automation are designed, built and delivered from India,” Craig said.

He added that a big part of HPE’s 5G core and private 5G developments are happening in India.
