The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has received 26 applications from companies including Samsung for the telecom equipment and design production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, senior officials said.

They added that 14 companies have applied for the second leg of telecom equipment PLI while 12 applications have been received for the new design-linked manufacturing plan. Thursday was the last date to submit applications for the schemes.

As per officials, while Samsung is a new entrant to the telecom PLI, a few existing firms have migrated to the design-linked manufacturing scheme.

The exact number of new applicants and their names could not be ascertained at the time of going to press.

The government will now finalise the companies from the applicants who will be eligible to receive incentives under the plan.

The DoT had notified the
PLI scheme for telecom equipment manufacturing with an outlay of Rs 12,195 crore spread over five years, on February 24, 2021. A total of 31 companies, comprising 16 MSMEs and 15 non-MSMEs including eight domestic and seven global companies were given approval on October 14, 2021.

The scheme was amended in April this year to facilitate design-led manufacturing with an additional incentive rate of 1% over and above existing incentive rates and a quantum of Rs 4,000 crore from the Rs 12,195 crore was set aside for it.

Further, additional telecom and networking products were added in the list of eligible products.

Currently, Samsung is not manufacturing telecom equipment in the country but once selected under the PLI scheme, it will start making the equipment locally, telecom department officials said. Samsung would then join other global manufacturers such as Cisco, Jabil, Flex and Foxconn, besides European telecom equipment vendors Nokia and Ericsson in applying for the PLI scheme that seeks to boost local production of telecom equipment and reduce imports.
