Apple<\/a> added Molex<\/a>, Onsemi<\/a>, and Shenzhen Erwin Precision Technology<\/a> as suppliers in India, growing its number of suppliers to 14 companies from 2021, the latest Apple Suppliers<\/a> List revealed.
The Apple Suppliers<\/a> List for fiscal year 2022 lists the top 200 suppliers of the company which represents 98% of its direct spend on materials, manufacturing, and assembly of its products worldwide.
Molex<\/a> and Onsemi<\/a> have facilities in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu respectively, while Shenzhen Erwin Precision Technology<\/a> has set up shop in Uttar Pradesh. It’s not immediately as to what Apple sources from these three suppliers.
These apart, Apple continued to work with its existing suppliers it added earlier. This includes its three contract manufacturers - Hon Hai (Foxconn), Pegatron<\/a>, and Wistron<\/a>, along with component suppliers such as Foxlink, Jabil, Flex and others.
However, a bulk of its suppliers remained based out of China which had 151 facilities serving the Apple supply chain. Apple added five while removing eight from its list of suppliers in the Far Eastern country.
Globally, the Cupertino-based company added 18 new suppliers while removing 19.
Not part of the India list is Tata Electronics, which started supplying mechanics for iPhones and assembling small batches of the iPhone SE.
The Tata Group is set to play a major role in iPhone manufacturing in the coming years as it takes over Wistron<\/a>'s manufacturing unit in Karnataka. The trial production of iPhone 15 is already underway, ET has reported.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook<\/a> said during its recent earnings call that India is at a tipping point with a growing middle class of the country serving as a major market for its products. Apple posted quarterly record revenues in India with a strong double digit growth, Cook said.
Underlining its focus on India, Apple opened two of its flagship retail stores in Mumbai and New Delhi in April.
The company sees India as a major production base. India already accounts for 5% of total iPhone production presently, with many expecting to to grow to 20-25% in some years.
iPhone exports surged nearly four times year-on-year to cross $5 billion in 2022-23.
