<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NEW DELHI: Satya Pal<\/a>, former telecom secretary and chief of the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL<\/a>) who is well-known for many industry-firsts, has passed away battling the contagious Covid-19 infection.

Pal is also credited as a creator of the
Telecom Commission<\/a> which had in 2018 renamed as the Digital Communications Commission (DCC<\/a>), a highest policy-making body of the telecom sector.

In May 1988, he was elevated to the post of Secretary,
Department of Telecommunications<\/a>, and Chairman, of the Telecom Board, and additionally served as the Director General, Telecommunications and Chairman, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL<\/a>).

Being a rich and vast experience in public and private sectors, he is also credited with framing the Cabinet note for the formation of
Telecom Commission<\/a> on the lines of the Space Commission in 1989.

Back in 1977, working as a General Manager,
Telecommunication Training Centre<\/a>, Pal prepared a project report for the establishment of Advanced Level Telecom Training Centre for the officers of the telecom department under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which was adopted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Under his leadership, India's first optical fiber cable system between Ahmedabad and Vadodara was commissioned in January 1989, and was a founder fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers India (IETE).

Post retirement, Pal joined Max India as a telecom advisor, and worked closely with Analjit Singh, founder-chairman of the Max Group, and continued his engagement with Hutchison Essar, Vodafone Essar, and later Vodafone India Limited.

Playing a key role in the formation of the Delhi-based telco group
Cellular Operators Association of India<\/a> (COAI<\/a>), Pal represented the telecom industry<\/a> at various national and multinational forums, and was a member of the Board of Directors at Paramount Communications since 1994.

Pal also served as a chairman of Mumbai-based Comsat Max Limited between 1998-2001.
