NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia today said it is working with U.S. Cellular to increase network capacity across markets, including the Northwest region of the US. Nokia’s announcement comes in the backdrop of surge in traffic demands fueled by Covid19 or coronavirus pandemic as millions of citizens work from home.

Keeping in consideration the surge in traffic demands, the Federal Communications Commission (
FCC) has granted a 60-day temporary spectrum license to U.S. Cellular and other service providers across the country to address the growing demands. Together the two parties have deployed the additional spectrum to boost connectivity for U.S. Cellular customers in markets impacted by COVID-19.

The temporary spectrum, licensed to Advantage Spectrum in the AWS-3 Band, was integrated remotely on Nokia Airscale
Radio Access Network (RAN), thereby improving network connectivity across 250 sites in parts of California, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin.

Further, U.S. Cellular is using Nokia’s endpoint security solutions to detect various malwares related to Covid-19. Nokia’s NetGuard endpoint security solution allows service providers to detect malwares across devices and help minimize its impact.
