NEW DELHI: The Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (Taipa) Tuesday said that in the wake of ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, there has been a 30% surge in data traffic, and maintaining telecom network has become critical than ever and the several states were yet to align their policies with the Centre's Right of Way (RoW) 2016 norms.

“To keep the data usage and smooth functioning of telecom services 24/7, the telecom sector needs critical robust infrastructure. With more than 3 years gone, only 16 states out of 36 States and Union Territories (UT) have broadly aligned their policy with RoW policy 2016," Tilak Raj Dua, director-general, Taipa said.

The RoW rules notified way back in November 2016 by the Centre provides a framework that allows approvals for setting up of telecom towers and laying of fiber cables and settle disputes in a time-bound manner, as well as improve coordination between companies and the state government authorities and local bodies.

The Delhi-based group said that the novel Coronavirus (
Covid-19) has created an unprecedented crisis across the globe because of which the govt has allowed and directed public and private employees to work from home, which has led to over 30% increase in data consumption and will continue till lockdown exists.

Meanwhile, Taipa in its letter to the telecom department (DoT) secretary and state chief secretaries said that in order to cope with the increased traffic, the telecom network capacity will have to be enhanced quickly through additional infrastructure and upgradation of existing towers including Cell on Wheels and optic fibre cable.

India is currently under a 21-day lockdown to contain epidemic which has now spread worldwide claiming nearly 40,000 lives.
