NEW DELHI: One in three individuals is intending to cut spending by 20 percent when purchasing a new smartphone, a Counterpoint Research study said on Friday.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, activities of all major countries have been severely affected. As the number of cases continues to rise, all major markets witnessed a significant reduction in consumer spending which will likely lead to negative global
smartphone sales growth in 2020, the study added.

The study which was conducted across seven major smartphone markets (USA, UK, India, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy) found that almost half of the respondents are expecting to delay their next purchase.

The number of respondents planning to wait before buying is the highest in India at 61 percent, followed by Spain (58 percent), and Italy (56 percent), respectively.

In India, half the respondents are intending to spend between $135 – $250 (Rs 10,000 – Rs 20,000), and more than half of the respondents intend to replace their
devices in the next year.

Due to long waiting periods, the average replacement cycle time in India is expected to be pushed to around 26 months from the current 22 months.

The study noted that
anti-China sentiments are the highest among Indian consumers as more than half of the respondents exhibit a negative attitude towards made-in-China products or Chinese smartphone brands. About four in ten respondents expressed they will not buy Made-in-China products or smartphones from Chinese brands.

Commenting on consumer purchase intentions, Senior Analyst, Pavel Naiya, said, “the coronavirus outbreak and future income uncertainty has affected consumer behavior with many strictly limiting purchasing to only the essentials.”

Consumers intending to cut their future smartphone purchase budget by 20 percent or more are highest in Spain (27%) and Italy (25%), followed by the USA (24%). Looking at the current scenario, Counterpoint expects the trend will continue until mid-2021.

Due to the mandatory social distancing norms, two-thirds of the respondents in India and more than half of the respondents in Italy and the USA are seeking ‘low touch’ sales channels, which is likely to lead more online ordering with home delivery and online ordering but collecting in-store – also known as online-to-offline (

“All O2O operations come with an overhead cost and additional expenses involved in the awareness-building campaign," highlighted Arushi Chwla, Research Associate at Counterpoint.
