"A complete ecosystem of 5G is getting developed in the country, right from 5G core network, radio network, telecom equipment and 5G handsets, and India is also contributing to the 5G standards in the global arena," the minister said, adding that the initiative was in line with the
Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Vaishnaw was speaking at the fifth edition of the ETTelecom 5G Congress - 2022.

Country's homegrown 5G technology 5Gi, developed by the Telecommunications Standards Developments Society India (Tsdsi) has now proposed to merge with the global 3GPP-backed standards.

"The
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is about to complete its consultations for 5G spectrum, and very soon we expect that the recommendations from Trai will be received, and in parallel the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on making sure that the auction process goes out," he said.

The Centre aims to auction spectrum in multiple bands by the mid of this year that includes airwaves in the 3300 MHz-3600 MHz band recommended by the sector regulator in 2018. It had fixed a base price of Rs 492-crore per unit on pan India basis which the telecom carriers termed as too high.

Following the virtual open house discussion last month, Trai has sought additional details particularly on the methodology of valuation from stakeholders.

"I am happy to share that now the government will also be using a small portion of the USO (Universal Service Obligation) funds for developing technologies for rural areas," Viashnaw said, adding that the efforts are on to make sure that the Internet would available in the remotest parts of the country, and supplemented with relevant technologies for the country using USO funds.

Last month, finance minister
